Shaun is my 24 year old stepson who has been diagnosed with a rare affliction called Hughes-Stovin Syndrome. Hughes-Stovin Syndrome is considered to be a very rare variant of Bechet's disease which affects his respiratory and pulmonary systems causing aneurisms to form in his lungs and now has caused Pulmonary Hypertension in the right side of his heart. Less than 40 published cases of Hughes-Stovin Syndrome have been described in English medical literature so far. He is in need of treatment starting with consultations with doctors in Ottawa about a possible surgical remedy, also treatment in Saskatoon, SK. or Edmonton, AB. He has been put on home oxygen to help relieve strain on his heart. Shaun had come to Saskatchewan with the intention of starting his life out here with assistance from his Dad. After a late start he was ready to obtain employment and do everything a twenty something young man would do. Then in November 2016 he ended up hospitalized in ICU with something that doctors had never ran into before. After exhaustive research one had nailed it down to Hughes-Stovin Syndrome. After nearly a month in hospital he was released to an abundance of doctors appointments and blood tests in order to keep on top of this little heard of disease. Things seemed to be going well until there was a noticeable decrease in his everyday ability to go for walks and to lift weight. He received a phone call from one of his doctors explaining that the doctor wanted Shaun to be admitted to hospital for tests which included a bronchoscopy and a cardiac catherization. This was a result of a CT Scan. The results of the cardiac catherization was a diagnosis of severe pulmonary hypertension on the right side of his heart. Through all of this Shaun has kept a great attitude towards his treatment and has shown great bravery in going in for everything his doctors have asked of him. He deserves to have a fighting chance of overcoming these setbacks and going forward with his own life.
