Just after 12:20 pm on Sunday, March 19, 2017, Morden RCMP along with the Winkler Police Service responded to a two vehicle head-on collision on Highway 32, just south of Winkler.

Assani's family of five was driving one of the vehicles involved in this collision. His wife and 11 year old son were transported via STARS air ambulance to HSC Winnipeg where they remain in critical condition.

This gofundme page has been inspired by Assani, who himself lives with a spirit of paying it forward. Your contributions will be used to help cover costs incurred during this traumatic time.

Here is Assani's story

Good people.

“I am originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo… I fled… and in 2014 I came to Winkler. I came with my wife and my three children. And I had nothing... On a Monday I came here (to Winkler)... On Tuesday I had a job interview… I got a job. On Wednesday I came to work without a lunch box… One of my colleagues asked me ‘Where’s your lunch’? and I said ‘I don’t have a lunch, don’t worry'… (He asked more questions…) Around 2 o’clock he left… and came back to me with an envelope of three to four hundred dollars. He said ‘This is from your colleagues. Go buy food.’ I said (smiling) ‘Are you serious?’…I contacted my wife and said ‘Hey! We will have food tonight!’… After work, they gave me more. I said ‘No, you already gave me money.’ They said ‘That is not enough’. They said ‘Do you have meat? Do you have chicken?’…They followed me home… ‘Do you have blankets? Do you have mattresses?’…

“I said ‘Ok, our life starts right here!’

“The next day… more money… more food. I have never seen people like this…

“On a Saturday evening we went to a church and we met another family there. They asked us how long we had been here, and I said ‘8 days’… They actually helped to supply everything we needed and the last thing they brought me was a car…

“And I thought that was the end of the story but I learned that the community of Winkler saw that we were new, and we had nothing, and we had people coming every day, bringing this, bringing that,… the whole month was about people bringing things and we couldn’t believe it…

“I am never going to focus on any negative things that have happened in Winkler… God bless you… You are good people. I can’t put into words what you guys have done for me…

“Today I am well and settled… If you come to my house you will feel like I am a Mennonite (laughing)…

“I am not equipped to pay back to these people. So, how can I help others? I have nothing material to give… So, someone told me that there is a service they do at Central Station,… and people can go volunteer there… It’s a little bit tiring after work… but I stand there, and I serve food to the people (on Monday nights) and it’s fun… And that’s what I have been doing (to give back). I think God knows that I do it with an open heart and to show love to the community…”
