Aslan the Diabetic Pug

Donation protected
2017 has already gifted Pacific Pug Rescue   our first special case of the year - Meet Aslan, he  was surrendered to us this week  after his owner could no longer afford his care.  He  came to us blind and unwilling to eat. We took him to one of our local vet partners to have him examined and undergo a gamut of lab tests.  It was quickly discovered that he has a ruptured eye   but it wasn't  until the next morning, once some of the lab results were in, that we would get insight on how serious his condition was.

The vet called and advised that we needed to rush him to the ER as he was headed for a diabetic crisis. The ER vet confirmed that Aslan was in  diabetic ketoacidosis, which is  what happens when diabetes has gone untreated for too long and there isn't enough insulin in the body. However his PH levels are in a good  range to  expect a favorable outcome for treatment

Dogs  with diabetes can live a full life once their condition is managed. Treatment is fairly easy once the right insulin dosage is determined; blood sugar can be maintained  with the help animal glucose monitors  and a regimented feeding schedule. We'll know more by the end of the weekend, but  we're very hopeful that he'll stabilize in time for his 8th birthday next week.

Treatment for Aslan has begun by looking for pancreatitis and urinary tract infections as those are the two biggest complications that could throw a wrench into the works. He is currently being hospitalized for at least 48 hours. The $5,000 goal is the grand total estimate for all of his tests, treatments, doctor visits, insulin and food to get him to an healthy and adoptable condition.

With your help we can get Aslan feeling better.  Every little bit helps, thank you for your consideration.

Aslan is currently in the care of Pacific Pug Rescue in Portland Oregon; a 501c3 nonprofit organization incorporated in 2006 that exists to rescue, rehabilitate and place unwanted, abandoned, neglected and abused Pugs in permanent adoptive homes that have been carefully screened. Pacific Pug Rescue is an all-volunteer organization; we do not have a shelter facility and all rescued pugs live with volunteer foster families while they wait to be adopted.

Thank you for anything you can give. You make the difference in the care of these special needs pugs.
