Hello, my name is Ashley Shumpert. I am a senior at the University of South Carolina where I am pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Hotel, Restaurant, and Tourism Management.
Attending a four-year college was simply a dream after graduating high school in 2010. As a first-generation graduate from Midlands Technical College (class of 2016), my dreams are now my reality with being a transfer student at USC. Through-out my two short semesters studying at the University, I have been presented multiple opportunities to study abroad. At the time, I knew that my life was not fit for studying abroad as a full-time student, and working part time. Well, just a few weeks ago I found myself at a seminar, engaged in conversation with a study abroad counselor! I realized at that moment, I wanted to take full advantage of this once in a life time opportunity. I wanted to go beyond my studies at USC, and study abroad.
Recently, I have been accepted into The Global USC program in the Galapagos Islands for three weeks in Summer 2017! My studies will include the Foundations of Tourism which introduces the discipline of travel and tourism with a special emphasis on the Galapagos Islands. Through-out my educational adventure, I would like to enhance my understanding of tourism by applying the knowledge and information learned in class to our excursions, and throughout my time on the islands. I want to diversify myself, and become comfortable studying and learning outside of the United States. I am going to challenge myself to adapt to life with my host family and to effectively communicate with them. In addition, I want to be introduced to the norms and culture of the Galapagos Islands. I want to enjoy the feeling of what it is like to live like a local. With my dedication and my newfound knowledge, I will be able to best support the diversity around me when returning to the United States.
I am very fortunate that I qualify to receive assistance from financial aid at USC to pay for the Global USC program fee. What the fee does not include is USC tuition, and my round-trip airfare from the United States to Ecuador. So, I would like to ask for your donation. I am seeking to raise $2500 dollars in just eight weeks! Every small or big donation to my GoFundMe account will help support my education. For all who donate to support my future endeavors, you will not be disappointed. I am and will be forever grateful for your contributions.
