Ashley's Fight Against Lung Cancer

$15,682 of $60,000 goal

On December 6, 2018 I went to the ER thinking I just had pneumonia. I was rushed from our local hospital by ambulance down to Banner University Medical Center in Phoenix, because I was having tachycardia and had a massive amount of fluid surrounding my heart and one lung. At Banner, they drained 3 liters off of my heart and lung during the first night I was admitted. They ran tests on the fluids surrounding my heart and lungs. I'll never forget December 8th, after multitudes of doctors came in from pulmonolgy, cardiology, obstericians, internal medicine and then finally an oncologist came in, he was the first doctor that pulled a chair out, and he sat down to tell me, that in the fluid, they found cells of malignancy. At that time, I was 23 weeks pregnant. And I couldn't even believe what he was saying. I was in complete shock. Up until the point of being hospitalized, I was a normal mom to a crazy 17 month old boy. Working full time, cooking and cleaning. I had been feeling run down, but I attributed it to the pregnancy and possibly having the flu. Little did I know that my lung was being collapsed because of the fluid pressure buildup. I had never heard of adenocarcinoma before. The oncologist told me that I have non small cell lung cancer.  After weeks of monitoring and getting the fluid build up reduced, I was released from the hospital without any tubes. But just one week after leaving the hospital I had a pulmonolgy appointment. During the ultrasound, the doctor found a significant fluid reaccumulation. He wanted to drain it, and place a pleurex catheter immediately. As of now, I need to drain the catheter in my lung, every other day.  I plan on beginning treatment as soon as I have all the tests back from the oncologist, and can evaluate my choices. Being pregnant complicates this. I am sure that the holidays have delayed a lot of the labs.  I am asking for donations to help with the medical bills, and because right now, I am unable to work.

My wife has moved on to her new job as a guardian angel for our 2 babies. Thank you all so much for your donation and prayers. I was lucky to be a part of Ashley's life. She brought me so much happiness and even had a good attitude when she was in poor health and was able to make me laugh when she was in the hospital, she loved to make me laugh. She always took care of other people before herself and I know that she will be the best guardian angel our family cold ever have.

Short update to let everyone know I'm doing the best I can right now but quite weak. I'm on oxygen 24/7 now. I'm in the process of getting all my Drs moved up here, from Phoenix, with major help from family, so that I can cut 4 hours of travel out of Dr appt days. That was just far too draining for me. My new oncology office, staff and Dr are just awesome. They scrambled and got me in the same week we called and got me consulted, and I had my first round of chemo with them yesterday. Needless to say I am very tired, after that, but hoping to start gathering my strength and energy. Trying to keep my spirits high. I love you all, near and far, for all the love and support.
As for Oakley, she is just some kind of miracle! She's a pure angel!! Thriving like I never thought she would! She's over 7lbs, and by all accounts if she hadn't been preemie she would have just been born around 38 weeks which was this past week. She is wearing size newborn diapers and clothes. It's just great to see how well of fortification she received inside the womb. So proud to have created a little beauty!

Welcome Oakley Marie!!!
Born 2/6/19
She is doing so well!! She cried as soon as she came out, and I'll tell you, I've never been so happy to hear a cry! She's strong and weighed in at 4lbs 10oz. She's 16 1/4inches. I am doing well so far too! Very relieved and feeling beyond happy! Thank you everyone for all the happy thoughts, prayers and well wishes. I am such a proud and happy momma! Dan and I are both so ecstatic and relieved! We are looking forward to each and every milestone! She has opened her eyes for us, and grabbed both momma and daddy's fingers. I got to change her diaper today and while she is delicate, the nurse said to just change her like a regular sized baby! Dan and I are such proud parents. I am so pleased and shocked by her size and how well she is acclimating to life outside of the womb.
*In my last update I accidentally typed the year as 2018, blame that on the hospital stay/baby brain/chemo brain! We've got a lot going on, and I couldn't get it edited to the correct date without deleting the whole update. Forgive me!*

Well we are excited and scared while we wait for tomorrow. I was having some heart complications, and with how much fluid reacumulation around my lung keeps increasing, we have weighed the risks and benefits of delivering Oakley early, and getting me on an even more aggressive treatment plan. Oakley will be 31 weeks and 3 days. So we toured the NICU today at Banner and we feel comfortable with where she will be staying and seeing how many nurses were there and available for all the babies. Each baby gets their own room, and one parent can even stay the night. The couch folds down into a small bed. I know we are in the best possible place to be, but I'm still worried like crazy. Some of the babies that I could just barely see from the hallway, were so tiny! But to be honest, during the 20 minute tour, I didn't hear one alarm, or any one of them in distress.
I am hoping my surgery(C-section) goes well tomorrow and we all want our little girl to be as healthy and robust as possible! Without a doubt, tomorrow will be a very tough and long day. I don't think I will feel up to updating the page then, but as soon as I've had some time to rest, recover and spend some bonding time with Oakley, I will get everyone some much anticipated updates and pictures. As always, we love and appreciate every thought, prayer, well wish, positive vibe, share and donation. We love you all!
