ARLIS New Professional Travel Award

Tax deductible
Hello! ArLiSNAP, along with the ARLIS/NA Development Committee, is aiming to raise money through crowdfunding to support an ArLiSNAP New Professional Conference Travel Award.

Many awards that ARLIS/NA offers are targeted at students or members serving on committees (for more details see the ARLIS/NA Conference Travel Awards Page ). This travel award would be targeted specifically for new professionals who have been in the field for five years or less.

If this campaign is successful, we will be able to reward a $1,000 travel award to one new professional each year for at least the next five years to help them attend our annual ARLIS/NA conferences.

What is ARLIS/NA?
The Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1972 to serve as a forum for art librarians. To date, ARLIS/NA has over 1,000 members across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

What is ArLiSNAP?
ArLiSNAP is the Art Library Students and New ARLIS Professional section of ARLIS/NA providing professional development and networking to students and new professionals in the field of art librarianship. We host webinars aimed at giving students and new professionals an opportunity to present and share their expertise. During the past few annual conferences, we have also hosted a career development workshop and a social night out.

Why Crowdfund the Award?
Last summer, ArLiSNAP and the Development Committee put a project charter before the ARLIS/NA Executive Board. We knew we wanted to promote a new travel award to help new professionals…. But where would the money come from? That’s where you come in! Our goal is to raise a seed amount of $5,000 which will support the award for its first five years! That is five new professionals you can help bring to our conferences. This campaign would also be a good test to see how crowdfunding works as a fundraising option for future ARLIS/NA initiatives.

Why New Professionals?
New professionals have a demonstrated financial hardship in their first years after graduating that can prohibit them from attending conference. These financial straits might come in the form of heavy student loan debts, lower salaries, little to no professional development support from their institutions, or having to take on part-time or temporary positions just to get their career started.

At the same time, new professionals have the most to gain from attending conference because it allows them to network and form a new group of peers, to learn from colleagues on specialized subjects that they otherwise might not have exposure to, and to market themselves and make connections that could aid in future employment opportunities.

“The conference opened my eyes to the many opportunities to get involved in the ARLIS community and helped me grow a network of art library professionals.”
-Courtney Baron, ArLiSNAP co-Moderator

What’s in it for you?
By donating to our crowdfunding campaign, you are helping to not only support our profession but support the future of art librarianship by investing in these new professionals at a critical part in their careers. New professionals bring new voices and perspectives to our day to day conversations about art librarianship and visual art resources. They strengthen our community as well as advocate for the future. Conferences are a great place for recent graduates to start getting involved in promoting our profession beyond their institutions. In donating, you are helping to support and reinforce the culture of philanthropy that thrives among our community and most importantly, you are helping a colleague in need.

“Once you attend, you meet new people who can guide, inspire, support, and advise you and this makes being a new professional a whole lot easier and less intimidating.”
– Angelique Roy, ArLiSNAP Canadian Liaison

How does the money breakdown?
Our crowdfunding goal is $5,400. This amount breaks down as follows. The bulk of the money, $5,000, would go toward five $1,000 travel awards to be rewarded one per year for five years. The other $400 goes towards GoFundMe fees. GoFundMe charges a 5% platform fee and then 2.9% payment processing fee plus $.30 per donation for a total few of 7.9% (or $395) and then +$0.30 per donation.

$5,000 (travel award) + $400 (GoFundMe fees) = $5,400

Travel Award:
$1,000 travel award x 5 years = $5,000

GoFundMe fees:
$5,000 x (5% platform fee + 2.9% payment processing fee + $0.30 per donation) = roughly $400

Is my donation tax-deductible?
ARLIS/NA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, therefore any donations are tax-deductible. Our campaign is marked as a “Certified Charity,” a program between GoFundMe and PayPal Giving Fund, and therefore guaranteed to be tax-deductible. When you make a donation to a Certified Charity campaign, PayPal will automatically send you a donation tax receipt by email.

What happens if we don’t reach our crowdfunding goal?
GoFundMe allows for campaigns to keep any money raised regardless of if the goal is met or not. Even if we are unsuccessful in meeting our crowdfunding goal, any donated money will still be put towards the New Professional Travel Award in ARLIS/NA’s budgetline.
