Rocky & Anna Grace

Anna Grace was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in April of 1998. She initially controlled her diabetes with insulin injections. However, for the past 2 years she has used a pump to admister her insulin. Soon after diagnosed as a child, Anna Grace embraced her diabetes and refused to let it control or define her. She attributes much of her positive outlook to what she learned while attending Camp Sweeney in Gainesville, TX, a summer camp for children with diabetes. She was fortunate enough to spend 9 years as a camper before she become a counselor at Camp Sweeney.

Recently Anna Grace has experienced several low blood sugar episodes. Without immediate intervention, low blood sugar could lead to a hypoglycemia coma. At the urgency of the loved ones in her life, she has made the decision to get a dog who will be trained as diabetic service dog.

Pete & Anna Grace have done a lot of research about diabetic service alert dogs. After praying and researching they feel that rescuing a dog and using Paws Training Center was the best path for Anna Grace.

Anna Grace originally looked into being able to purchase a dog that is already trained but the cost of those dogs could be $20,000 or more. She decided to rescue a dog who needed a home and do the training through Paws Training Center located in Chester County. Anna Grace just this week adopted Rocky who was abandoned in Philadelphia. He is very sweet, although currently is malnourished.

Rocky needs to complete basic dog training before starting on the diabetic scent training. Although the cost of training a rescue is significantly cheaper, it is still costly and will be approximately $5,000-11,000. The actual cost will depend on how quickly Rocky masters the initial training and how long it takes him to master the scent training.
