Elephant Care in South Africa

There are over 120 elephants in around 25 different facilities in southern Africa where tourists can interact with elephants.
Our key objective is to not enter the debate of whether these elephants should be in captivity or not, but to implement an independent scientific assessment of their welfare.
Each facility keeping elephants has its story of how it came about and so to does each elephant have a story, that it cannot tell. The concept of captive elephants interacting with tourists is extremely controversial within certain animal rights groups, and it is these groups who are calling for the travel trade to not support elephant tourism facilities.
Conservation Guardians began the process of designing a scientific assessment of elephant care (welfare) in captivity in 2013 with the bio-ethics department of Padova University. The objective being to conduct the most comprehensive study of all research done on elephant welfare.
An objective study of elephant care focuses on feedback from the elephant, and not a humans perspective of what the elephant is feeling. The study is based on three pillars:
- a behavioural assessment
- a physiological assessment, and
- what we refer to as Expert consensus.
Where research has not provided the answers we have needed to complete this scientific assessment model, we have used expert consensus to find answers, or we have completed experiments to provide the pieces of the puzzle that were lacking.
Six elephant facilities in southern Africa, have volunteered to be assessed and to work with us to complete the process of designing this assessment model. Their commitment to elephant care in southern Africa has extended to establishing a professional body that will regulate the industry through establishing standards and criteria for captive elephant management. This means that ongoing research at facilities committed to the process will ensure that ALL elephants at these facilities will receive the care that they deserve.
Your support of this initiative means that our independent assessment of elephants facilities volunteering to be assessed, will continue annually. Our teams of academic specialists need to travel to each facility to conduct studies on each elephant, the group of elephants and the management of the elephants at that facility. Depending on the number of elephants at a facility, an assessment can take up to five days to complete.
Your financial support means that the assessment of each facility retains its integrity, and the research teams are not being paid by the facility.
