Nola has been diagnosed with moderate Scoliosis.
Scoliosis is a curve in the spine with an onset usually between 10-20 years old. Just a few short months ago, Nola’s mom noticed her rib was displaced and her dance teacher noticed her shoulder blade sticking out. Her mom, Krista took her for an x-ray and with a 30-degree curve in her spine it was determined she had scoliosis. Mild cases of scoliosis are not normally a problem but at 30 degrees it is considered moderate. If this progresses as she grows (and it is likely given the amount of growing she still has ahead of her) surgery is required once it reaches a 45-degree curve.
Since diagnosis Nola's mom has been waiting to see an orthopedic surgeon and has been doing lots of research on treatment options which include: “watch and wait”, bracing for 23 hours a day and surgery.
A treatment centre that is only available in the U.S. has provided some hope that focuses on special exercises/strength training and “evening only” bracing. This treatment is focused on “helping kids be kids” and to support them in keeping them active, and participating in activities that they LOVE, like dance. Being able to continue dancing is so important to Nola. She has developed into a beautiful dancer and is part of a competitive team.
The week of May 14-18th Krista and Nola will be headed to Michigan for assessment & boot camp at the Scolismart Clinic to kick off her treatment. The costs for this treatment and a custom brace will be upwards of $6000 Canadian, plus regular follow up visits of approx. $300 Canadian and travel/accommodation.
As you can imagine, this will be a very costly treatment plan for the Reuber family and a long road for Nola.
We are grateful for any amount that you are able to donate.
With love,
