What are the StormBots?
We are a FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) team at Skyview High School in Vancouver, WA. Initially formed in 2007, we are in our 11th year of competitions. Each season a new challenge is announced by FRC and then the fun begins! We have approximately 6 weeks to design, build, program and test a robot to fulfill the requirements of the challenge. This process includes hours of CAD work, fabrication of custom parts, assembly of a framework and controls system, programming all functionality as well as testing and practice driving the robot. All told over 3,500 hours of time go into building a functional robot.
Who are the StormBots?
The StormBots are made up of high school students (grades 9-12) who go through a rigorous selection process prior to being invited to join the team. This year we have 56 students working on a number of sub-teams: Competitions, Controls, Foundations, Frameworks, Functions, Programming and WingNuts. Each of these teams plays a critical role throughout the season as we work collectively to perform well at the competitions and earn recognition for the whole team. We also are fortunate to have 26 mentors helping this year. Our mentors are adults who work full time jobs in related industries and then generously give their evenings and weekends as volunteers to work with the students on each of the sub-teams.
What does your donation do?
Each year we build a robot specifically designed for the year's competition. As part of this we must purchase many individual components that all go into building a robot. We also travel to competitions throughout Washington and Oregon, as well as the World Championships in Houston, TX should we qualify. While traveling and at competitions we must pay for food and lodging as well as our team "uniform" (a custom designed t-shirt for each year's team). Your generous donation will help to fund all of this by supporting the Skyview High School Boosters.
