Amanda's Culinary Journey

Hi All… my name is Amanda; I am a junior at Pawling HS and a first-year student in the Dutchess BOCES Culinary Arts and Restaurant Management program. I have just recently won 1st Place in the NYS SkillsUSA Culinary Arts Competition. I am the first Junior to compete at the State level and to win first place. Thus far, this journey that began with my Regional competition in January 2017 where I placed 2nd, has been a surreal and breathtaking experience for me.
The journey continues… on June 19th, 2017, just 2 days after me turning 17, I hope to be traveling to the National Competition for Culinary Arts in Kentucky. I know I have so much more to learn and I believe this opportunity will allow me to grow through a hands-on experience.
Unfortunately, this amazing opportunity comes with a big expense within a short period of time; one that my family and I do not have. Between the airline flights, hotel accommodations, new uniform requirements, transfer/transportation, and of course meals for the 4-5 days that I am there; the cost of which I have been told can be over $5000. I will be participating in fundraisers through BOCES in order to absorb some of these costs, but I have very limited time to fundraise while also preparing and training for the Competition and still continue to keep my Honor Roll GPA, work my part-time jobs and continue my volunteer work.
My dream has always been to work within the culinary field. In pursuit of this goal, I have worked in a bakery for two years and recently started working as a line cook in a new restaurant in my local neighborhood.
Competing at the National level for Culinary Arts will provide me an opportunity to further and more thoroughly explore this field. It will give me unique perspective and insight into the hard work, dedication, and determination that is required to have a successful culinary arts career.
