Raise the Roof at Alt Space
Already Alt Space Detroit has become host to several community development projects including GrapeSeedDetroit a multi-stakeholder cooperative built on Detroit's history of grape-growing. Collaborative partners in this and other projects have included Feedom Freedom Growers, The Boggs Center for Nurturing Community Leadership, The Field Street New Work Collective and a number of neighborhood block associations.
In full operation Alt Space Detroit will support community organizations and individuals in the social justice movement providing safe and affordable lodging, workspace and community gathering space in a progressive setting built on principles of sustainability and non-violence.
What's this Campaign About?
After 3 years the project is moving into its final phase: The roof. The houses size, age, unique Châteauesque design, complicated roof assembly and the steep pitch (angle) all contribute to the amount of work and risk involved bringing the cost of this project to $20,000.
This spring the house has been selected to host participants for the North American Social Solidarity Economy Forum and later in the summer will host students from several State University of New York schools who will collaborate with Alt Space and the Ghana Think Tank on a community-driven construction project.
I'm happy to offer some photos I received from the roofer yesterday showing some actual roofing in progress. I guess they were busy putting the roof on and did not have time to send these.
It seems as a reminder that the bill is due this week, they sent these along.
Regardless of the timing, here's what your generosity helped pay for and, thanks to you, work on the inside of the house can continue.
Thanks to everyone who has helped with this campaign, making contributions, spreading the word, and researching materials and local companies. Big kudos to all of you.
We are not completely done with the campaign as we still have gutters to put up and there is that little matter of...er...paying the bill.
With checks and other pledged contributions we are at just under $12,500 . Our last request for your support raised about $2,000 in just two days. Thanks Thanks Angie, Luis, Rob, Seth (and Ann), Steven and Tina.
We still need to raise $7,500 to make good with the roofing company, who have been amazing! They have asked that we make a second payment now (on my way to the post office) and they are hoping for a final payment on May 15.
Will you spread the word and help us pay the bill on time?
The roofer has been at it for the past three days, although I haven't been able to get a picture. I'm not going to push the matter (getting the roofer to take photos, that is) since we don't have the money to pay yet. In case you haven't noticed, we still have half-way to go to reach our goal of $20,000.
If we ever needed a miracle we need it now.
HERE IS THE BIG ASK.
Please lend us a big hand in any of the following ways. 1. Match your gift. If everyone did that today, we'd be done. 2. As we know many of you have given all you can (super grateful). Perhaps you can do your own mini-campaign to raise just the amount you have already given. For example, if you gave $25 you could try to get five friends to give $5 each (your friends will likely find that a sweet gesture and be happy to do it). 3. Just spread the word!
Regardless of what you might be able to do today or in the future, we are so incredibly grateful for the support you've already given and hope to see everyone of you in Detroit.
Update: We hosted a group of young people from Ferguson as well as member of the youth worker cooperative KALUK (pictured) at the North American Social Solidarity Economy Forum. We'll also be hosting more folks starting in July (including a group from SUNY's Purchase, New Paltz and Buffalo).
We'll continue to send updates and get those photos of the new roof to you as soon as possible.
Be well all,
Reggie & the friends at Alt Space!
It appears that the fascia boards will not need to be replaced, cutting about $2000 from the budget and bringing the campaign back to the original goal of $20,000 (with no wiggle room, however).
Yes, that means we are more than halfway to our new goal (including the additional matching pledge of $1,490) at $10,832 dollar raised to date.
With work starting Monday, April 4, I hope you will please consider contributing to this project and helping us raise the roof. Thanks to all of our contributors so far (including you, Janice).
We'll be stepping up the campaign for one final week, as we welcome visitors from the North American Social Solidarity Economy Forum where the project will be officially announced to the social justice community. Please spread the word.
