Allison Proszowski for Board of Ed.

My name is Allison Proszowki, I am 18 years old, and I am running for the Board of Education in Clifton, NJ.

I am not here for selfish reasons, nor am I interested in going into politics or law. I am simply here as a citizen of Clifton, because I care deeply about improving our schools.

I have gone through the public school system from kindergarten through twelfth grade. I have benefitted tremendously from everything Clifton has to offer. I learned that it really is a great thing to be a mustang. Yet as a former student and recent graduate, I am also able to see the flaws within the system.

I saw our teachers get laid off because the district couldn’t find enough money in the budget to pay them. I saw millions of dollars leaving Clifton and going to Passaic County Technical Institute when my friends from middle school, and 500 or more other students every year, decided to go to what they thought was a “better” high school. I saw two bomb threats to the high school in one year, and a shooting threat that made half the students skip school that day out of fear. I saw the school administration and the Board, ignore the voices of the students time and time again as we asked for help, and as we offered new solutions to problems in the district.

In response to these and countless other problems, in October 2014, several dozen Clifton High School students met outside the Clifton Public Library and created a student union. I was there that day, and I was the first to speak at the next board meeting, where we announced that “We are the Clifton Student Union and we will not be silenced.”

I will carry this attitude with me to the Board of Education, and ensure that everyone’s voices get heard. I have attended almost every board meeting for the last two years, and never hesitated to speak my mind. I spoke against the budget cuts, I spoke against the new turf field at the high school, I spoke against the PARCC and standardized tests. I supported changing the grade weighting policy, I pushed to create the Student Representative position, and I always, always, always, spoke in support of the students, teachers, and citizens of Clifton, and will continue to do so for the next three years.

If you would like to make a donation, it will go towards the cost of lawn signs and flyers, to advertise for my campaign. Any extra money that I receive and do not use before the election, I would like to donate to scholarships for Clifton high school students. Thank you for caring about our town. Let's make Clifton Schools better, together!

It’s time for a change. It’s time for the students to be heard. Thank you.
