Alexus Wiebe Brain Injury Treatments

Donation protected
Hi everyone, thanks for visiting!  We have this Go Fund Me page set up for our daughter, Alexus.  She suffered a concussion November of 2017, and her life has changed dramatically since then. Diagnosed with PCS (Post-Concussion Syndrome), she now lives with a mild  TBI (traumatic brain injury). We are trying to raise enough funds to have her treated so that she can resume normal life again!  For those who don’t mind a bit of a long read, see below for the full story! Thanks for your support!

John 1:5
“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness does not overcome it.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hello! Meet Alexus Wiebe, an energetic and full of life 15-year-old girl. A book lover since childhood, she volunteers at her local library, as well as managing her church’s library, and reads a diverse range of material.  She also loves music…..not only listening to a wide variety of bands and genres, but also playing it. Currently, she plays the piano and ukulele, with hopes of adding more instruments to her repertoire.  She has a strong faith and is passionate about Jesus. She enjoys the opportunity to deepen her knowledge by regularly attending Bible quizzing, and out of town Bible quiz meets. She loves hanging out with her family and friends (and dog!) She is super excited about all that life has to offer and is very enthusiastic and motivated to pursue her passions.
All of this changed, however, on November 22, 2017. Alexus suffered a concussion during gym class.   She hit the back left side of her head on a brick wall while running backwards. She momentarily passed out and came to feeling “pins & needles” in her legs.  She was very disoriented and stunned.  When asked if she was ok, Alexus responded that she was fine. She had gone into shock and described later that she felt as if she were in a bubble underwater and everything was happening in slow motion. Alexus can see now that she was not completely aware as to what was happening - and how she was feeling, a common reaction in head injuries.
Alexus began feeling nauseous and went home to rest, where noise and light started to bother her.  A trip to the E.R.  confirmed she had a concussion. The doctor’s prognosis was to take a few days off school to rest, then slowly return to normal.
Symptoms began showing up more as the days passed. It was confusing at best and difficult to pinpoint what was going on.  Trying to keep up with her schoolwork was difficult because she would become exhausted from the work. She would need to sleep a lot to recover from even small amounts schoolwork, reading or any other activity. Her appetite was all over the place, and she would often skip eating because of the constant nausea, and began losing weight.
2 Corinthians 12:9  (ESV)
“But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”
A doctor described the delayed onset of some symptoms as normal. It can be like getting a deep bruise; one does not see the full effects until much later. It can be the same with a brain injury, which explained why it was hard to tell in the beginning what was going on.
Three weeks later, things had not changed. In the E.R. once again with a “flare up”, Alexus still had not been able to resume normal life. A class here, a class there was all she could manage. A lot of her days were spent in her room, in complete dark and silence, along with hours of naps a day. She would say and do things that weren’t normal, and completely forget what she was doing at times. She had difficulty making good decisions. Anxiety and confusion became a new normal for her.
Alexus has had chiropractic, massage, and acupuncture to treat her whiplash. She has seen specialists for neuropsychology and vestibular testing, as well as specialists who deal with concussions. The concussion specialist in Winnipeg has said there is nothing more that can be done for her.
She had difficulty reading and writing because her eyes couldn’t focus after her accident and had trouble with convergence.  Alexus had to get prism glasses to help, and well as prescription sunglasses to combat light sensitivity and special earplugs to filter out frequencies and noise that triggered headaches and fatigue. Hats and hoods are her friend! They help decrease light and noise.
Alexus attempted several times to return to school in fall of 2017, but ended up returning to homeschooling, where she could learn at her own pace and rest as necessary.  She currently completes about ¼ of her schoolwork needed, and has been steadily falling behind since her injury. This is especially hard for her, as studying and school are a huge part of what she loves doing!
She must live with varying symptoms daily (fatigue, dizziness, noise/light/motion sensitivities, comprehension issues, sleep problems, headaches, etc.). It is not uncommon for Alexus to have conversations, only to later wonder what and why she said the things she did. She has to limit her social activities to short amounts of time. Alexus’ family often has to travel in 2 vehicles to accommodate her health, usually leaving functions early to bring her home to rest.
Psalm 73:26 (ESV)
 “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”
Sometimes she chooses to go out to social activities longer, knowing that she will pay a price afterwards.  A normal recovery time from a simple social function can be anywhere from 2-7 days. It is not uncommon for her to have to spend several extra hours per day sleeping/resting or sitting in complete darkness and silence in order to be able to function again.  Heat, air pressure changes, bright lights, noise, crowd movements, etc. are all triggers for her. She will have good days, and then days that are tough, where she mostly sleeps and gets up in between to eat a little and then rest again.
“Some experts believe post-concussion symptoms are caused by structural damage to the brain or disruption of the messaging system within the nerves, caused by the impact that caused the concussion”
We have recently learned of a well-educated and experienced doctor in Florida who has knowledge in dealing with many different kinds of trauma.  His name is Dr. Fuller of Fuller Health Center.   Several friends of ours have highly recommended him to us, and have personal experience with his treatments.  They have had life-changing results - including full healing from a concussion. He has over 30 years experience and not only validates her symptoms of injury, but says that he should be able to treat her and eliminate the problems.  He would use a special laser treatment to “unlock” the blocked cells located within the 12 cranial nerves in the brainstem.  Dr. Fuller explains that the impact of her concussion has locked the function of these cells, and a weeks worth of treatments (several per day), can restore them back to their normal function.
We are asking for your help! Total costs amount to $13,000 Cndn.
·      $10,000 in treatments
·      $3,000 in accomodations, food, and travel
We would love to get Alexus to this specialist as soon as possible, so she can resume normal life again!
Thanks so much to everyone for your support!
