Alexander's Journey

Alexander Goodwin is a 9 year old British boy who has Ewing Sarcoma Cancer of the leg and hip. I met Alex's mom while helping my friend, Teri Atwell, sell Alexander's Journey t-shirts at Bass Pro in Olathe. Teri and I were talking about what more we could do to help with fundraising and thought of GoFundMe. Alex is currently in the United States receiving treatment at K.U. Medical Center and Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas and Missouri. Ewing Sarcoma is a extremely rare form of cancer affecting less than 20 children in the UK and less than 200 in the United States each year. In addition, last week Alexander's family received the devastating news that their immigration status only allows Alex to stay until April. He won't finish treatment until end of June! Alex loves nature, natural history and science and is passionate about conservation and protecting nature. He loves birds of prey, garden birds, sharks and dinosaurs. Alexander's Dad is a Police Officer in England and part of the Thin Blue Line. In December 2016, Alex and his family came to the United States for treatment that would significantly increase his chances of survival and reduce the impact that life saving surgery will have on his quality of life. All his treatment needs to be paid for as he has no insurance here. He has undergone chemotherapy and life saving surgery from one of the leading surgeons in this field of medicine but will require further treatment for many years to come including further ground breaking surgery, Radiotherapy and intensive Physiotherapy, and Hydrotherapy, all of which will need to take place in Kansas, to maximize his chances of survival. Alex's life is linked to Kansas now for the next 10 years, as he requires detailed scans and specialist technology regularly until he reaches adulthood and stops growing. He will make a trip to Kansas from the UK once every three months for years to come.
The Law Enforcement community, Kansans and the wider American public have rallied around the family and we have taken him into our hearts. Alex loves the United States and it is now just as much a home for him as is England.
