Lizbeth Hunter  DELANO, CA
Alex was diagnosed with Rhabodomyosarcoma at the age of four.  His treatment consisted of chemotherapy and radiation to fight a very aggressive cancer.  He beat it!  He later, at the age of thirteen, was diagnosed with Hurthle Cell Carcinoma; this cancer is believed to be an effect of treatment from the first cancer.  He beat cancer again!  He has had to manage and live with the many immediate and late effects of  treatment.  One of the most complex issue were Alex's teeth.  They were of little use to him, as eating was painful due to his teeth being loose.  Now at the age of 16, he made the brave decision of having all of his teeth removed, (19 in total), to begin the process and make room for dentures.  Unfortunately, while insurance did agree to pay a portion of the initial oral surgery, they have denied to pay any portion for dentures.

This page has been created to facilitate anyone out of our area who wishes to help.

Thank you for your support,
The Hunter Family

Dear Alex, your story has inspired me. My wife has also beaten cancer. I am a dental ceramist in Phoenix Arizona and a member of the American College of Prosthodontists. I specialize in making implant supported bridges that are made out of zirconia instead of plastic. ( see the attached profile photo ) Zirconia is the most life-like and durable material I know of. It would be my privilege to help you by donating my time and labor for the lab work to make two zirconia bridges for you. I can work with your dentist or one that I can recommend to you. I wish you all the best. Contact me at 623-566-4663 or gotracy1@gmail.com

Warmest Greetings to Alex, his caring Mom Lisbeth, and the rest of the family. My name is Michelle, I'm 42, and I live in Oregon. I read about Alex's brave story, and it really struck a cord since it mirrors parts of my own in many ways. I have Lupus, Sjogren's Syndrome, and severe Rheumatoid Arthritis. The Sjogren's in particular attacks the moisture producing glands in my body, especially my saliva glands. As a result of it, and various chemo like treatments to control my diseases, my teeth began to snap like glass in my mid-thirties. I'll spare you the gruesome details, as I'm sure you are all painfully aware of what a horrible experience that is for anyone to endure. By age 39 I was down to 13 teeth, and suffering one life-threatening bone marrow infection after another. I have decent insurance, but as in Alex's case they refused to pay for extractions, or the cosmetic surgery needed to rebuild my teeth, even though the broken teeth and infections were a direct result of my medical conditions. We looked at many options, but I was advised that dentures were not a good choice for me, because of the Sjogren's disease, and the fact that they do cause further bone loss, and would greatly limit the things I could eat. Now certainly they are the least expensive option, but after consulting with several nationally renowned Prosthodontists I discovered that dental implants, using bone grafts from my own jaw so as to lessen rejection possibility, was the best option for me. It would offer a permanent solution to my problem, give me my confidence and smile back, and allow me to once again bite into a fresh, juicy, apple, without fear. The only drawback being, it was a much more expensive and extensive process. In the end, as my bone marrow infections worsened, my Father stepped in when insurance refused our appeal, and offered to pay for my surgery and reconstruction. I found an amazing Prosthodontist named Dr. Sorenson in Portland, Oregon at Clear Choice Dental, who was the former head of the UCLA Prosthodontic dept. He along with Dr. Burrstein as my surgeon removed my infected teeth, implanted the implant posts, grafted around them with powdered bits of my own jaw, shaved from areas where it as the thickest, and then created temporaries for me to wear for six months while the implant posts anchored firmly into my jaw. After that, Dr. Sorenson used photos of my smile, taken before I got sick, to start building my new teeth. I even got to select the shade I felt matched best. The end result was phenomenal!! I had my confidence back, I could talk, laugh, and smile again without being embarrassed, and that first juice apple was pure heaven!! I'm much happier than I think I ever would have been with dentures, and I thought it might you all to hear a bit of my story while you are making your decision about what type of reconstruction to get for Alex. I feel confident in saying that should you choose to go with implants for him instead of dentures, the public who have so lovingly and generously supported you this far, would help your family reach this new goal. I can eat just about anything I wish, I don't have to worry about my teeth coming out, my jawbone eroding, or my gums becoming ulcerated. Best of all they look like my teeth used to before I got sick, and they go along way towards making me feel like a more normal person. It was the best choice I could have made under the circumstances, and I haven't regretted it for a moment. I wish Alex, and the rest of your family much love, happiness, and success. If you have any questions at all about the implant procedure, please don't hesitate to email me at PurpleGimp@gmail.com or contact me on Facebook at www.facebook.com/purplegimp. Nobody realizes how important their teeth, and their smile truly are until they're gone. As a teenager who has already fought so many brave battles, Alex deserves to feel confident about his smile, and the chance to enjoy all of the things that other teens do, without having to worry about his teeth. He's lucky to have such caring parents as his advocates, and I know you will all make the best choice for him, no matter what. For SHAME on these insurance companies for treating so many of us like our lives don't matter! We ALL deserve so much better! Please give Alex a hug for me, and tell him that there's someone out there who understands what he's going through in many, many, ways. Best of luck to you all. ~Chelle
