Supporting Alder

Donation protected

See this gal?  She is strong, beautiful and brave.  Alder is fighting Stage II breast cancer with grace, humor, and grit. She recently completed the first half of her six-month long chemotherapy treatment (Yay!) But she still has a ways to go . . .

After chemo, Alder will undergo either a lumpectomy or a mastectomy, followed by radiation, and then hormone therapy to make sure the cancer does not return. With the support of her husband, David, many friends and loved-ones, Alder is standing up to cancer, one day at a time.

We want to do something to help Alder and we are looking for your support! She is family. She cared for my daughters Eva, Nina & Bianca when I was a single, working mom.  During the seven years Alder was in our daily lives, she taught our girls so much and is responsible in part for who they are today.

On October 2, 2017 I will be running through the Grand Canyon, Rim to Rim ("R2R") for Alder. Please consider a donation for Alder and David for each mile of my trek, 23.9 miles to be exact.  Alder and David will use these funds to replace/supplement Alder's lost income while she is under treatment and for out of pocket medical expenses. We'd be honored and grateful for any donations on their behalf.

To learn more about Alder, please read below (written by David and by Alder's friend Eve):

"Alder always says, 'the Lake is my church.'  Alder is a part of Lake Superior and Lake Superior is a part of Alder. It’s where she feels at home. It’s what connects her to her family, friends, and the natural world. It’s what makes her who she is: introspective, generous, compassionate, and strong. Alder loves new places, foods, and experiences, like when we lived on the western coast of Norway for a year—in a place so similar to northern Wisconsin. Alder is determined to overcome cancer so that she can continue to travel and experience new things, to be present for her friends and family, and to stay part of the Lake. Alder makes the world a better, brighter, and kinder place, and does the same to everyone who knows her." -- David Natvig

"Those of us who are lucky enough to know Alder know how kind, fierce, whip-smart, tough as nails, creative, artistic, beautiful, and silly she is. Alder is also a thoughtful and loving caregiver who has made a career out of giving to others. Now it is time for us to give to Alder on her journey of healing in the ways that we are able." -- Eve Bertrand
