Alchemy Model Addiction Treatment

We need your help supporting a transformative healthcare model that can successfully fight opiate addiction in rural underserved communities.

Gina Perez-Baron MD is a Stanford-educated family medicine physician practicing in rural New Mexico and the founder of Alchemy Integrated Medicine (AIM).

For two decades, before it spread to the rest of the U.S., the epicenter of the opiate epidemic was in Northern New Mexico. Dr. Perez's experience has taught her that effective treatment must be intensive, integrated and evidence-based.

Long-term recovery requires addressing the changes in brain chemistry, thinking and behavior that accompany the disease of addiction. She has developed a novel treatment approach that combines intensive behavioral therapy with buprenorphine (Suboxone).

As the medical arm of TriCounty Community Services - a community mental health organization serving Northern New Mexico - AIM provides intensive weekly group-based medical and behavioral healthcare. Licensed therapists provide group, individual and family therapy. Case Managers assist with housing, transportation, finances, referrals, insurance and patient education. Clinical pharmacists educate patients on medications and their side effects and equip every patient with the life-saving benefits of naloxone (Narcan).

Dr. Perez focuses on the underlying factors that are most directly correlated with recurrent relapse: anxiety and depression, chronic pain, insomnia, ADHD and trauma.  Patients cannot achieve long-term recovery unless these issues are fully addressed.

Dr. Perez's work has been featured on PBS NewsHour - Addiction in America series - and the Taos News.

At a time when so much of the country is struggling to find a successful path, Dr. Perez's approach is a model that works in rural underserved communities. Alchemy Integrated Medicine is seeking support for this critical work.

Funds raised will be used to help support the mission of the clinic, to keep the doors open and continue effective healing and expand services to neighboring counties.  Donations will also fund the contingency management arm of treatment.

Dr. Perez wants to connect with other providers, therapists and social workers who are interested in providing care and treatment to people suffering from addiction. She is looking for grant writers and research assistants to help the Alchemy Model of treatment expand.
