The First-Ever LGBTI AfroGames Urgently Needs Your Support

The AfroGames 2018 is a Sports & Cultural event taking place 8-10 December 2018 in Durban, South Africa promoting the rights of LGBTI individuals in Africa by celebrating diversity, encouraging respect and understanding and inspiring acceptance.  Participants will compete in athletics, football(soccer), touch rugby, netball, and squash and attend a day-long symposium on "Decolonizing LGBTI Rights in Africa".  As homophobia remains rife in Africa, and consistent with the Federation of Gay Games’ unwavering mission to support the LGBT+ community across the African continent and in other priority regions, we are appealing to our global community of supporters and partners for urgent help.

The dedicated members of the AfroGames2018 Local Organizing Committee (LOC) working with other NPOs such as KZN LGBTI Recreation, KZNGALTA, Durban Lesbian and Gay Centre and Same Love Families have partnered with the University of KwaZulu-Natal to bring this historic (and much needed) event to Africa.

With just under a month before the AfroGames 2018 is set to begin the team on the ground in Durban is in urgent need of last-minute funding support to ensure that basic event production costs are met, including local transport services, cleaning services, water provision, sporting officials and security.

The AfroGames 2018 values are proudly South African but advocate and promote LGBTI rights across the entire African continent with core values enshrined in principles of mutual respect, non-discrimination, equality, diversity, acceptance, participation, inclusion and personal best. The AfroGames 2018 organizing body is made up of experienced LGBTI athletes, academics and artists who are long-time, high-profile advocates and activists supporting equality in LGBTI sport continent-wide.

As LGBTI arrests in Tanzania are taking place as we write this, https://www.rte.ie/news/world/2018/1102/1008179-lgbt-tanzania/, athletes and artists from South Africa, Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, Zambia, Zimbabwe are preparing for AfroGames 2018 in solidarity and urge you to join then in supporting equality this important cause.

The Other Foundation, an African trust that advances equality and freedom in southern Africa (with a particular focus on sexual orientation and gender identity), have qualified  AfroGames 2018 for matching funds for all donation made to KZN LGBT Recreation.

Our friends in Africa are counting on us to help make AfroGames 2018 a success and bring the’ spirit of inclusive organized sport to a part of the world where the lack LGBTI rights and freedoms remains an obstacle for so many.

Please give what you can today and thank you for your support.
