BUILDING THE VILLAGE

Rooted in the understanding that “It takes a village to raise a child”, the African Youth Mentorship Network (AYMN) is the platform that brings together like minded “villagers”. These are the men and women who shape and drive the Network's vision of mentoring youth to BECOME individuals who meaningfully contribute to society.

At the heart of AYMN is ubuntu, a Southern African humanist philosophy that means “I am, because you are”. Ubuntu can be described as the capacity, in African culture, to express compassion, and is grounded in the understanding that the village is a key building block of society. At AYMN we believe that alone we can only get so far, but together our success is more resounding and certain.

Being aware of the importance of positive representation, mentorship, and the role that fathers play in the upbringing of children, AYMN developed a mentoring programme for young men between the ages of 13 and 18 called BECOME. The programme was developed by seasoned professionals including academics, psychologists, emotional intelligence experts, entrepreneurs, business executives and athletes.

The overall objective of the BECOME programme is to empower African adolescent boys by educating and inspiring them to become emotionally intelligent, socially responsible and self-confident individuals capable of making meaningful contributions to their communities.

BECOME is a six-year mentorship programme that pairs young adolescent boys with mentors and actively equips them with skills and tools that that they need to BECOME better men in their societies. Youth transformation demands that young people possess the skills and competencies that will enable them to be engaged thinkers, doers, and 21st-century citizens. These skills and competencies include personal management and leadership; effective communication and collaboration; critical thinking and problem solving; creativity and innovation; social responsibility; as well as cultural, global and environmental awareness. Activities that enable the development and nurturing of these skills will be part of their mentorship programme at every phase of the curriculum.

BECOME’s inaugural camp, to be held in Johannesburg, South Africa in 2018, will welcome 20 boys from five African countries, with the long-term goal of hosting adolescent boys and camps in every African country.

Be part of the Village, your contribution will help a young boy BECOME.
