African Irrigation Project

Last month I went to Africa and WOW! I had my eyes opened to how people struggle to survive.  Witnessing something like that changes a person.

In our country we have so many different kinds of opportunities to “make a living”.   In theirs, they just try to survive from week to week.  Jobs are scarce, and people are faced with lack of resources, little to no funding, and are basically helpless to create or generate anything new. They rely on one another to survive,  and share what little they have.

I had the opportunity to visit in the village of Serere, Uganda. They welcomed me with open arms and shared what they could, and I would like to repay their kindness by making a difference in their community.

So this is where I need your help:

My friend Jacob, has a vision for his community, involving some farmers, youth, and local schools in the form of agriculture. There is land available around the schools to grow gardens, which would enable the students to experience hands-on gardening as well as learning in the classroom.  In turn, the schools will be able to provide daily food for the students, as opposed to waiting for government handouts, which are often unreliable. Often times children go hungry.

I was able to provide some funding for basic supplies needed to start a few acres of Jacob’s agricultural project, such as watermelon seeds, green pepper, sweet pepper, passion fruit, pumpkin and egg plant, and another friend (Maureen) has supplied some fertilizer. They have been waiting for the rains to come so they could plant, but it has been 6+ weeks since the last rain, so it would be a waste to try growing anything at this time.

The problem they are facing these last years, is always weather related. They are at the mercy of the unreliable rains and daily +30 C heat.  Research shows that one of the main reasons why agricultural practices are still low and lacking in developing countries, especially Africa, is the dependency on rain.

There are springs, wells and ponds that are available to use - *IF - they had the equipment to utilize these resources.  Pumps and accessories such as sprinklers, nozzles, and hoses etc would be life changing for this community. They would be able to continuous crop year round, put food on their tables, and they would also be able to market the extra produce to help sustain and support the community.

I believe in the Chinese proverb: “You give a poor man a fish and you feed him for a day. You teach him to fish and you give him an occupation that will feed him for a lifetime.”

When you sit down to your supper tonight, think about those who struggle to find something to eat for their only meal of the day.

Let’s BE the change we wish to see in the world, one project at a time!!

Thank you in advance for helping us achieve our goal!!  Every little bit counts!

SO MUCH LOVE, GRATITUDE, AND BLESSINGS TO YOU ALL
