The Manor and Highland Park cenotaph was the first to be erected in the city of London Ontario, initially dedicated May 31, 1925. This was quite incredible at the time as Manor and Highland Park was and still  is one of the poorer communities in London. When the statue was vandalized in the late 70's/early 80's, a committee was formed to restore the cenotaph to its former glory. Cost of the restoration was $20,000 (again an incredible feat for the community).
Every year since Nov 10, 1918 (the day before the armistice to end WW1 came into effect) a Service of Remembrance has been held here. At present the cenotaph has memorials for WW1, WW2 and the Korean War. This year the committee is planning  to add an Afghanistan memorial. A new granite base has been acquired and an artist commissioned to engrave it. The soldier and present base will have to be removed. The new base will be engraved at the artist's studio then  raised into place. The final step will be to reinstall the WW1 soldier.
The inscription on the new base will read
The official unveiling of the Afghanistan memorial will be on October 27, 2018.
The Church of the Epiphany, on whose property the cenotaph sits, has been very supportive. The church has advanced the committee a loan to ensure the project gets completed in time for the unveiling.
Total estimated cost of the project is $5000.
This go fund me page has been created in honour of those who served  and those who lost their lives in the war in Afghanistan. May we never forget their sacrifices.
