Adithya's medical fund

Hello everyone

My name is Kotha, M Reddy.  I am running this fundraising campaign to meet health care costs for my son Adithya. He is a student at Wright State University (Dayton, Ohio) pursuing Masters in Electrical Engineering. We are a family of 4 hailing from city of Hyderabad, India (South India). After completing his bachelor’s, he migrated to USA in 2016 chasing his dream of completing his Master’s. He was progressing well in his academics and to put it mildly, we were very proud of his academic achievements.

In the fateful month of November 2017, Adithya started to come down with headache and neck pain. He went to Raj Soin hospital, Beavercreek where he was initially treated on out-patient basis. As his symptoms got worse and he was getting confusion in addition to the headache, he was admitted to the hospital and was treated with antibiotics. His initial tests revealed that he had Meningitis. However the doctors weren’t able to figure out the bug that was causing the infection. Following 5 days of treatment for Meningitis in Raj Soin Hospital, he went into Coma and was transferred to Kettering Medical Center.

Adithya continued to be comatose for the next 20 days of December while Physicians were figuring out the cause of Meningitis. Meanwhile he had 2 brain surgeries, First one was to cut out a piece of his skull (bone flap) so as to relieve the pressure of the infection and the second surgery was to place a pipe (shunt) which will drain the extra infection from the brain. By this time his brain has swollen up with a serious infection that rendered him comatose and on a Ventilator.

I was informed by his friends of these unfortunate and heart breaking events. I was able to secure a visitor’s visa and arrive on December 15th. It was heartbreaking to see my 23 year old heap of love lying in a bed with wires, a machine breathing for him, his skull open and a part of brain exposed. Eventually, Physicians were able to figure out that my son Adithya has Tubercular Meningitis (TB Meningitis) and started antibiotics to treat the infection. Then he had another brain surgery in which Physicians connected the infection draining pipe internally. I was helped in and out of the hospital by a team of dedicated friends of my son and as well as Wright State University Student affairs department.

Eventually he came out of the coma, seemed to have improved a bit in January 2018 but was still in ICU. My joy was only short lived as he developed a serious infection of the drain pipe (VP shunt) and slipped back into coma again. At that juncture the Physicians gave up the hope. I have to admit that I was living one day to the next thinking of the unthinkable. There were a few marvelous people that supported me during that time. Adithya - being a fighter that he is, came out of infection and coma in February.

He improved slowly to the point that he did not need to be on monitors and machines. He was moved out of ICU. He is currently able to open his eyes and his mouth. He is grimacing to pain and able to show frustration of his face. He is not talking or moving any parts of his body and the Physicians are not sure if he will ever recover. They could not guarantee if he would ever be able to move his limbs or ever going to talk. He got discharged one week ago to Sycamore Life care, Miamisburg, Ohio for rehabilitation.

Here in the rehab, I sit in his room looking at him, wondering if he will ever talk to me or talk to his mommy. All the while my poor wife is suffering in India. Thanks to technology she was able to see him a few times on a phone screen. I cannot imagine her state of mind. I don’t even know if she has any hope left. I do not have any tears left. Every day is a struggle in this alien country with my son struggling with his life. HOPE keeps me going in my current state.

We need a lot of support emotionally and financially. Thanks to a few kind people in USA, I am able to manage basic necessities and commute to Sycamore Life care rehab to see my son. I would appreciate any sort of help you may be able to offer and I thank you for it from the bottom of my heart.

Help me God.
