Mike's Addiction Counseling Degree

Donation protected
My name is Mike and I am currently enrolled to begin classes on October 2nd, 2018 in pursuit of a Bachelor's degree in Addictions Counseling at Indiana Wesleyan University.  If you know me you know how important this is to me and how much my own life has been affected by addiction.

For several years I battled a problem with alcohol and prescription pills.  After several failed attempts at getting sober, things finally clicked for me in January of this year and I am currently 7.5 months clean of all drugs and alcohol.  Through my recovery, I have assembled a set of tools and resources that have helped me create a new sober lifestyle.  I have done this without relying on attending 12-step meetings and the traditional methods of recovery.  You can read much more about my personal story and approach to recovery on my blog at www.ownsobriety.com .

There are many more people just like me.  And a lot of those people do not get the help they want and need because they are not aware of the programs and resources available.  As an addictions counselor, I will have a great opportunity to relate to addicts with my own personal story and be able to introduce them to non-traditional and alternative recovery options.  I hope to dedicate as much time as I possibly can over the next 2.5-3 years to learning everything I can about addiction and recovery.  In doing so, I will incur a substantial amount of student loan debt.  It will also obviously also require a considerable time commitment.  That's where this funding campaign comes in.

I plan to make my studies my #1 priority during this time.  I hope to only work part-time while going to school and I don't want to have to borrow any more than necessary on my loans.  In order to do this, I need to be able to generate additional income.  Most of you know that I was the former founder and co-owner of ThirdWeb Solutions, a web design and development firm that served Northeast and Central Indiana during its time in business.  Since the end of ThirdWeb several years ago I have provided web services on a freelance basis and still possess the skillset and knowledge to compete in the industry.  So my plan is to supplement, or ideally even replace, my income with revenue from re-launching some form of my web services.

However, this requires a time commitment and some startup costs.  The funds from this GoFundMe campaign will be used to help me build a professional website promoting my services and to help me free up some time in my schedule to market and manage my new business.  Startup costs include domain name registration, web hosting, Adobe Creative Suite subscription, design & development time, marketing & promotional ad spend, Chamber of Commerce membership dues, LLC formation and more.  With a little help, I fully believe that I can generate steady income on my own once again and be in a position to better focus on school.  I also plan to utilize this time to continue to write new content, further develop and promote ownsobriety.com.

If you cannot donate but still want to help there are several other ways you can help me out.  First, help me further the reach of my recovery blog, OWN Sobriety , by liking, following, commenting and sharing it on social media.  OWN Sobriety has pages on Facebook , Twitter , Instagram , and Pinterest .  Second, once I launch my new web services business please like, follow, comment and share that page and its social media accounts as well.  Third, please share this GoFundMe campaign page with anyone you know who may be able to help.  Fourth, I'm all about positivity and feeding off good vibes so just simply shoot me a message letting me know you took the time to read this and to wish me well.

Thank you to everyone for your support.  I'm one of the fortunate ones to have been given a second chance at life after overcoming addiction.  I wholly promise to not waste or take for granted a second of it.  I will work my ass off to give back and get myself in a position to help others who are struggling.

Below are some supporting documents highlighting my needs and commitments to my education.  Love y'all!
