While my brother and sister in law were having their baby, their house was broken into and many of their things were stolen.
My brother, Adam, is a student and works in youth ministry and his wife, Lindsey, is a nurse. They have saved everything for her to be able to take maternity leave, as she started with a new company about the same time they learned that she was pregnant. She is not covered by FMLA.
Adam has been sick for most of his life, and is on life-preserving medications, daily. After not knowing if they’d ever be able to conceive a baby, last year, they miscarried unexpected quadruplets. They were given a gift in the single occupancy pregnancy of Adley Shay. Now that she is here, and Lindsey if officially on leave, they are living exclusively on their savings.
As every new parent knows, the precious time of having a new baby, is fragile and thrives on security and basic comforts. It also is a great time to binge watch TV/movies while desperately trying to sleep, while healing and bonding with the new baby. Their TV and all their movies were among the items stolen (I know it’s the digital age, but my brother’s DVD collection was vast).
Baby Adley is still in the NICU and Lindsey is still in the hospital. Adam went home to check on the cats, to find that the home he’s worked so hard to create for his new family, was vandalized.
He would never ask for a penny on his own… but he has 5 sisters and we’re so far away physically, it’s one of the only ways we can help.
