Another devastating earthquake hit Acheh, North Sumatra on December 7th 2016 leaving hundreds seriously injured with the death toll now at over one hundred, including young children, and still rising as victims or survivors are still being dug out from underneath the rubble.
The shallow 6.5-magnitude quake damaged homes, shops and mosques in the district of Pidie Jaya, completely destroying hundreds of structures, including the Pidie Jaya hospital.
The priority is now the search and rescue mission to find survivors and attend to the injured, as well as future reconstruction and rehabilitation programs with the hope of developing more structurally-sound buildings.
The quake's epicenter was 12 miles (19 kilometers) southeast of Banda Acheh. No tsunami warnings or advisories were issued, however residents still fled to higher ground for safety after the quake struck as they are still traumatised by the devastating earthquake and tsunami in 2004. The 2004 disaster killed more than 120,000 people after a tsunami swept across the region, leaving millions homeless. Sadly, due to local government administration issues, much of the money intended to provide earthquake/tsunami relief were never received by those most in need.
Therefore, the North American Achehnese Society will directly distribute the funding to the locally affected areas to help provide temporary shelters to the victims and families and give them access to clean water and food. Most importantly the money will be prioritised for emergency and medical assistance as well as logistics involved in removing rubble to retrieve and evacuate survivors trapped underneath.
Our goal is to raise $10,000, however even if you can only make a gift of $5-10, your contribution will be significant to those in Acheh who have lost so much.
