Hi Everyone
My name is Carolyn LaVeglia, and I am currently working on a documentary film titled-Able.
Let me tell you what it is about and why it matters.
Able delves into the lives of several young adults in the special needs community and their families. Michael Laveglia, 18, is 1 in 81,598 young adults with a diagnosed disability in New York City. He and his peers will guide us through the journey of childhood, education, adolescence, and newfound adulthood with a disability, showing us what that really means.
They are figuring out what their rights are and how to access them. They are also figuring out the rights they do not have, but need. To put it simply, it is not easy. It requires support, guidance, determination, and strength-qualities inherent in all of these fantastic individuals.
My subjects are the reason to make this film. Michael, my brother, diagnosed with autism at 17 months old, has triumphed through everything life as thrown at him, big or small. He needs to and wants to be heard. I want to give him a voice. Trust me, he has one.
There is no simple fight for equality. Many of us fight against all odds for a voice, a platform, and an opportunity to live up to our full potential. It is time now to hear one more fight, one we scarcely get to know, one that does not require pity, but requires action, one that will inspire us with optimism and light through adversity.
I want put my time and energy into this project. I believe with my whole heart that this is a message that needs to be heard, and if it is, we can make a change.
Right now I have very limited access to film and sound equipment at my school, so what I need are the resources to invest in equipment of my own in order to make Able a possibility.
Any size donation makes a difference here and your support means so much to me. Even recommendations and contacts would be helpful. I know this will all pay off in the end, and I thank you for taking the time to care about this project and all who are involved.
