Our sweet two year old German Shepherd mix has been dealing with swollen, bloody paws and a patchy face for almost a year.
We worked alongside our vet for months, trying different foods, medicines, and creams. Nothing helped. Last week, we panicked. Her paws were huge, red, and hairless and she would not eat. We took her to an urgent care facility where they performed many tests that our vet hadn't. The results? Mites. Tons of them. The dermatologist said, "on each hair we pulled, we stopped counting at 40."
That means our poor dog has hundreds of thousands of mites wreaking havoc on her body. She now has bloody patches on her face, and we had to put her in a cone today to give her paws a break.
She is currently on two antibiotics to try to fight against her bacterial infections caused by the mites. She just started a medication used to fight the mites, and we are giving her pain medicine as needed.
We have spent a lot of money on this sweet girl. She brings so much joy to our family. When she is well, she is a sassy, talkative dog who makes us laugh constantly.
We miss our old Abby, and we are willing to do anything to get her healthy again.
