A Concluding Interview with an Australian Wartime Veteran – Moss Berryman

As the last surviving raid member of WWII’s Operation Jaywick, Moss Berryman has a story to tell, and we have a duty to listen. Moss was just 19 years old when he and 13 other men from the Allied Forces Z Special Unit undertook one of Australia’s most daring and successful wartime missions.

They spent four months at sea aboard the Krait, a reclaimed Japanese shipping vessel, and travelled from Exmouth, Western Australia to Singapore Harbour with no promise of a return. The members of Operation Jaywick dyed their skin and hair and wore sarongs to better disguise themselves as the local fisherman. Eight of the crew paddled 50km in folding canoes deep into enemy territory, attached limpet mines to seven Japanese shipping vessels and successfully sunk or destroyed each one. Every member of Operation Jaywick made it back alive and hold the record for the longest amount of time spent undetected in enemy territory. Unfortunately, a repeat mission later in the war didn’t have the same success and some of the Z Special soldiers from the first mission were captured and killed.

The Australian Defence Force offered the team sixpence per day in danger money for the mission; 75 years later, they still haven’t been paid.

This piece of Australian history was hidden behind a top-secret veil for decades, and right now, for the last time, we have the opportunity to be taken on a journey through Moss Berryman’s firsthand account as a member of the Z Special Unit in the Second World War.

We request your generosity in this GoFundMe campaign to support the production of a short film honouring the legacy of our wartime heroes who participated in Operation Jaywick and the bravery Moss Berryman and his fellow raid members showed on their courageous four-month mission.

The Adventure Group is going to re-enact this epic feat of Special Operations, focusing on the canoe approach to Singapore Harbour.
We do this to honour and commemorate the men that carried out this raid, for they are the forebears of today’s Special Forces community from which we draw our DNA. We do this also to raise funds to support Australia’s veteran community. This is a fundraising mission.

Hello to all the wonderful donators, thank you so much for contributions so far.

Apologies for the lack of updates, we have been busy on this side trying to get this incredible story off the ground.

Firstly our team, lead by The Adventure Group, completed a reenactment of Operation Jaywick for the 75th Anniversary. More about what we set out to achieve and what we did can be found here https://hqtag.com/opjaywick/ I've also included a few photos.

Secondly, we have been in constant contact with Moss Berryman about his involvement in this project. We were scheduled to film with Moss last weekend, the 10th and 11th of November. Unfortunately, the shoot had to be rescheduled as Moss has fallen sick and did not feel up to it, a decision we completely understand and respect. At this stage, we are respecting Moss's wishes to allow him to recover.

We will be in touch over the coming weeks with any updates, Thank you.

This is a total disgrace! We have current and past politicians who could repay this debt out of their lunch money. I have long thought that our system of govt is a farce and needs a complete revamp. Don't ever forget our history, it made Australia, Australian!! A promise is a promise and a hand shake used to mean geniune committment - front up Aust Govt and pay out !!! At today's CPI !!!

I agree - why is our Defence Force or War Memorial not all over this? RSL involvement? Moss Berryman should be handsomely compensated for sharing his story. I salute you sir

The better read us would have read The Australian Classic, "Heroes". I read this book on my own volition in High School in 1979. It was an amazing read. I have even had the privilege of standing aboard The Krait once docked at The Southport Yacht Club on the Southport Broadwater. Amazing men. Operation Ramu another story all together. Cpl Mitchell RAAF retired.

Not yet paid their danger money - yet we give billions away. I am ashamed. I could bet that this is no longer taught in schools either. Some of the 1/2 a trillion being used to re-vamp the War memorial should go to this. I am so proud of our past, present and future soldiers...

Our government needs to wake up and support our service men and women instead of using them... I have personally known a few service men that have served our country and the government treats them like trash. Not paying them and money, dodging payments, cutting them off, forcing people to go through court cases to get their basic pension they were promised. To all the men and women who serve and protect our country, our rights, our way of life, our families, I say thank you!!!
