A Stable Home for a Refugee Family
Donation protected
Rita is a 25-year-old woman, who fled Honduras after surviving years of horrific domestic violence at the hands of her children's father. She arrived in the United States three years ago with her then 4-year-old daughter Ana and little more than the clothes on their backs.
Through hard work, Rita was able to start rebuilding her life in Maryland. But disaster struck when Ana was diagnosed with leukemia. Rita scrambled to find medical care and quickly took Ana to the New York City area in search of treatment. Now, Rita and Ana are facing eviction.
Ana has been undergoing extensive and invasive treatments for over a year, including radiation and chemotherapy. She has suffered from multiple complications and infections along the way, as her chemotherapy is administered directly into her spine. It is critical that Ana live in a sanitary space because her treatments suppress her immune system, leaving her prone to infections. Rita has had difficulty maintaining stable employment while assisting with Ana’s daily care, which requires frequent doctors’ visits and hospitalizations.
Rita and Ana live with two family members, who provided them with financial support as they struggle to treat Ana’s cancer. But, now the family’s home is facing foreclosure and they must leave immediately. They found a new apartment, but they do not have the means to cover the first month’s rent and security deposit, a total of $3,600. They are certain, however, that they will be able to pay their monthly rent if they can find help with paying the initial fees.
Please help us assist this refugee family in accessing a safe, clean, and stable home. We are particularly hopeful that we can help Rita find a stable home for Ana so that they can continue to focus on her health, and Ana can have the chance to recover—and get back to the business of being a 6-year-old child.
Thank you!
