Building a new house for a family in one of the poor neighborhoods ('Independencia') in Lima / Peru
After my previous fundraising campaign (in mid 2018! - not the one I did for Tanzania in 2015) having been only little successful, I am now giving it another try to do something good with combined forces. And if now for Christmas someone of you should still have some savings left, then this might be a nice option and I would be very happy about each and any contribution – as small as it may be. What I am referring to is the following:
As most of you might already know, I am currently travelling South America for about half a year. My first stop in September 2018 was Lima / Peru, where I met Michael (a former colleague from my (former) employer Siemens / see our team picture) and his wife Anne. (More about this you can also find it here: www.timeoffmylife.com/2018/10/19/from-nuremberg-via-lima-to-cusco). Anne and Michael have moved together with their two kids for 4 years to Lima, where they are now working for the welfare / social organization YMCA (Young Men’s Christian Association -> www.limaymca.net), together with which they are organizing / managing a wide range of social projects in and around Lima, such as street working / taking care of street children and the support of families in one of the poor neighborhoods (named ‘Independencia’) in the surroundings of Lima.
After Michael had taken me with him to his daily work and showed me various of their projects, he then asked me (and basically I also already had this idea in mind), if I would be willing to get involved in and support one of these projects. And (of course) I had – even more so since the idea of my half year journey through South America was anyway not only to constantly jump from one tourist hotspot to the next, but once in a while also do something that would be meaningful (not only to myself). And as some of you may know - my first commitment I already accomplished it, staying for four weeks as a volunteer in the ELIM Cusco orphans’ home in Cusco… But now – finally! – let’s come to the point I want to make:
Concisely, the idea is to build a new (simple) house for one of those poor families in Independencia, which – in many cases – is urgently (!) required. During my first visit to Lima I have seen myself how under which poor conditions and in which kind of houses (or better say ‘sheds’) families in Lima are often living – not to say dwelling. As a guy from Europe, I found it had to image how this is at all bearable, especially for children…
For this purpose, the YMCA has compiled a list of families for which support is most urgently required. And each time when sufficient funds are available, a new project, i.e. the construction of a new house, is being kicked off and implemented. And in doing so, such kind of new house to be built requires nothing more than some 2000 EUR – i.e. under western condition basically not significantly more than the blink of an eye. Of course, these kind of new houses are very simple and everything but fancy. (See also the attached below pictures of one of the former projects when such house was built.) They are basically prefabricated houses, consist of not much more than some wooden walls plus a ribbed roof, and can all be quickly assembled within only a few days. However, these houses - including their electricity connections and fixed / paved floors - already mean a huge improvement and step forward for those affected families. For example – what I found hardly imaginable – a house with a fixed floor, which families often simply do not have, is very useful when it comes to toddlers first learning crawling, and later on walking. Having no fixed floor to train on, this is not that easy … And, of course and from a more general perspective, only if the families have some stable shelter, they can focus on other things like e.g. a permanent employment to make a living.
In short: I think this is an option where – with only quite little effort – something really good can be accomplished! And if sufficient funds will be raised (that is ~2000 EUR), then I will make my way again to Lima (probably in April 2019 and of course at my own charge) in order to conduct the project, i.e. build the house, together with Anne and Michael – and of course I commit to take plenty of pictures, so that donors will later on be able to follow up what has been accomplished by means of their contributions!
I will be happy about each and any contribution – may it be huge or little – and even more will be the family who will be benefitting from it!

Hausbau für eine Familie aus einem Armutsviertel ('Independencia') in Lima / Peru
Nachdem meine letzte Spendenkampagne (mit Mitte 2018! - nicht diejenige für Tansania in 2015) leider wenig erfolgreich war, versuche ich es nun noch einmal, mit vereinten Kräften etwas Gutes zu tun. Und sofern jemand zu Weihnachten noch etwas Erspartes übrig haben sollte, dann ist das Folgende vielleicht eine schöne Option. Ich würde mich jedenfalls sehr über jede auch noch so kleine Unterstützung freuen. Es geht um Folgendes:
Wie die meisten vielleicht schon wissen, reise ich momentan für ca. ein halbes Jahr durch Südamerika. Meine erste Station war im September 2018 Lima / Peru. Dort habe ich Michael (einen ehemaligen Kollegen von Siemens / siehe das Teamfoto) und seine Frau Anne getroffen. Die beiden sind mit ihren beiden Kindern für 4 Jahre nach Lima „ausgewandert“, arbeiten dort für die wohltätige Organisation CVJM (Christlicher Verein Junger Menschen – oder auf Englisch: YMCA – Young Men’s Christian Association -> www.limaymca.net) und organisieren / verantworten verschiedene soziale Projekte in und in der Nähe von Lima, z.B. Jugendarbeit mit Straßenkindern und Unterstützung (Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe) von Familien im Armenviertel ‚Independencia‘ am Stadtrand Limas.
Nachdem Michael mich für 2 Tage einfach zu seiner Arbeit mitgenommen und mir verschiedene Projekte gezeigt hatte, hatte er mich dann gefragt (bzw. eigentlich hatte ich diese Idee ohnehin schon im Hinterkopf), ob ich nicht vielleicht Lust hätte, mich an einem dieser Projekte zu beteiligen bzw. zu unterstützten. Und das hatte (bzw. habe) ich – umso mehr da ich einen Teil meiner Reise ja ohnehin damit verbringen möchte nicht ausschließlich von einem touristischen Hot Spot zum nächsten zu springen, sondern auch etwas (nicht nur für mich allein) Sinnvolles zu tun. (Und meinen ersten Einsatz hatte ich ja auch bereits im ELIM Cusco Kinderheim in Cusco.) Nun aber endlich (!) zum Punkt:
Konkret geht es darum, dass in Lima‘s Armutsviertel Independencia für eine Familie ein neues (einfaches) Haus gebaut werden soll – was in vielen Fällen auch dringend (!) notwendig ist. Bei meinem ersten Besuch habe ich selbst gesehen, in welchen Verhältnissen / Behausungen (um nicht zu sagen „Verschlägen“) die Familien dort teilweise wohnen. Als Europäer ist es schwer vorstellbar, dass das überhaupt dauerhaft auszuhalten ist – vor allem für Kinder…
Der CVJM führt zu diesem Zweck eine Liste mit Familien, für die Hilfe am nötigsten ist. Und immer wenn ausreichend Finanzmittel vorhanden sind, wird ein neues Projekt (sprich der Hausbau) angestoßen und umgesetzt. Dabei kostet ein solches neues Haus nur ca. 2000 EUR – für europäische Verhältnisse also praktisch nur ein Wimpernschlag. Natürlich sind diese neuen Häuser ebenfalls sehr einfach. (Siehe dazu auch das unterhalb angefügte Bildmaterial vom Hausbau bei einem früheren Projekt). Sie bestehen weitestgehend lediglich aus einigen Holzwänden und einem Wellblechdach, was alles nach dem Prinzip „Fertighaus“ innerhalb weniger Tage aufgebaut und fertiggestellt werden kann. Aber allein damit bieten diese Häuser schon deutlich mehr Komfort - z.B. einen Stromanschluss und einen festen Boden - als das, was die Familien häufig bislang haben. Und – auf diese Idee wäre ich erstmal gar nicht gekommen – ein fester Boden ist allein deshalb hilfreich, wenn die Kleinkinder erst Krabbeln und dann Laufen lernen. Ohne festen Boden ist nämlich z.B. allein das schwierig Und ganz grundsätzlich ermöglichst erst ein festes Dach über dem Kopf den Familien, sich auf andere Dinge (sprich Erwerbstätigkeit) konzentrieren zu können…
Kurzum: Ich denke, dass an dieser Stelle mit verhältnismäßig kleinem Aufwand viel Gutes getan werden kann! Und sofern ausreichend Spenden zusammenkommen (sprich ca. 2000 EUR), dann werde ich (voraussichtlich im April 2019) noch einmal nach Lima reisen (natürlich auf eigene Kosten!) und das Projekt, sprich den Hausbau, persönlich zusammen mit Anne und Michael umsetzten, tatkräftig mit anpacken und das Ganze natürlich auch fotografisch dokumentieren, damit alle Spender/-rinnen hinterher nachverfolgen können, was mit ihren Beiträgen bewerkstelligt wurde.
Über jeden auch noch so kleinen Beitrag freue ich mich daher sehr – und die Familie, der das Ganze zu Gute kommen wird natürlich umso mehr!
