A Migrant Women Campaign in NY

Donation protected
My name is Andreia, I’m 22 years old and I was born in Lisbon. I am a young journalist that likes to adventure herself in writing about people who have life-stories capable of opening new horizons. This year, for exemple, I had the luck and the privilege of writing a long report about the situation of gipsy women in Portugal and to interview Mª T. Horta, a writer who has dedicated her life to fighting for freedom, being censored and violated in the time of Portuguese dictatorship.

However, the biggest accomplishment I had this year was the campaign Translate into Power, dedicated to migrant women who live in Portugal and face extraordinary difficulties, in social, economic and political terms.

The campaign consists of 5 videos, each one dedicated to the most predominant nationalities in Portugal (Brazil, Cape Verde, Ukraine, Romania and China). Every video consists on a poem regarding feminine exaltation, written by an original poetess from every single country and recited by three immigrant women from the country in question.

When I talked with my colleague António about how this idea could turn out to be a real and important project, he took less than 5 minutes to embrace it and helped me with everything I needed.

After a long time seeking someone-who-knows-someone-who- knows-someone, we were able to reach out to 3 Cape Verde women, 3 Ukrainian women, 3 Romanian women, 3 Chinese women and 3 Brazilian women. We recorded in the breaks of their work, during their days off, in their own homes, and, in some cases, next to their children. Nobody – not me, nor Antonio or even those  magnificent women – gained a single euro from this. The campaign happened because we wanted to give more voice, space and visibility to migrate women, we wanted to highlight their strong character and sensibilize everyone regarding this topic. This campaign was made from the willingness of these women to empower others.

I recently received the news that the Cape Verde video won an award in the PLURAL+ festival! The ceremony will be held  on November the 19th at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, and all PLURAL+2018 will be showcased at the Paley Center for Media of New York on the 21st of November. This was all made in the suburbs of the little city of Lisbon, so thinking about New York is bigger than anything I ever dreamt about!

However, the festival can’t help me with the travel costs, and, like I said, I am just a 22 year-old girl who can't even afford her own recorder for the interviews, let alone a ticket to New York. I'd really like to go, because I think it is an extraordinary opportunity to represent the campaign there. To make this  happen, I created a crowdfunding!

I would be so thankful if you could help me get this done. This campaign belongs to you too!
