A Home for Clariss

Donation protected
Clariss and her family are facing homelessness. At the age of 73, she is losing her home, and we can’t let that happen.

Her situation is complicated by the fact that while she and her family were trying to find alternatives, she has had a stroke.

The stroke was primarily centered toward the center of her brain, so it is not as serious as it could have been. But it radiated into the left hemisphere, which compromises her balance, her coordination, her ability to speak, and her ability to use her right side, including her computer because her right hand is weakened and does not work right. She cannot drive. She cannot climb stairs. Someone even has to accompany her when she walks so that she does not fall.

Her living options were always limited because she lives on Social Security. But now they are very limited because she cannot drive, let alone move to another part of the country where housing is more affordable. She had found two short-term alternatives while she looks for a permanent place, but because of the stroke and its limitations, neither is now viable because she is totally dependent. At a time when she needs to be very independent, she has become, nor now, totally dependent including for her living needs.

Her daughter is helping her, but this has limited her daughter’s availability to work and resulted in severe restrictions on her daughter’s income, and that is why they face the immediate loss of their home.

As well, Clariss is now facing surgery because her right carotid artery is compromised, and this complicates her situation even more. Options that were available to her before are now closed off because they were made with the understanding that she would arrive fully independent while she looks for low income, safe, senior housing. (The wait lists in the area where she now lives range from one to six years, and her housing needs are immediate).

This is where we come in, to help her out financially until she is back on her feet and to help her afford the cost of moving as soon as she is able. Can you help? Please [click here] to make a financial donation to help her keep a roof over her head while she has necessary surgery on her carotid artery and heals from the surgery as well as the stroke, and also to enable her to move to a permanent home she will be able to afford as soon as she is able. Please help her.

"I was so much younger then, I’m older than that now" (a play on My Back Pages, by the Byrds). There are no current pics of me with my hair gone white and my somewhat droopy face, but this is the me I used to be. I still wear long earrings, and it is the me I will once again become as I heal from the stroke (although I’m sure my hair will have gone even whiter by the time I get through this mess, am settled somewhere, and can write again).  Anyway, thank you.
