A Breath of Life for Don Hansen

Donation protected
My name is R.J. Kost.  Sometimes you get a feeling that it is your time to help someone.

Don Hansen is a current school board member and has been a mechanic for farm equipment repair for many years.  The last two years, while being on the transplant list, we have seen Don struggle to make meetings and be effective as a board member carrying his oxygen with him everywhere he goes.  He has worked hard to be an effective board member and we admire him for those efforts.  During this time, knowing you could die any day was a challenge both physically and mentally but Don kept moving forward.  Having to quit his self-employed job as a mechanic because of his medical situation has made things very difficult.

His prayers were answered December 10th when the hospital in Denver called at 10:00 p.m. telling him he had to be in Denver the next morning for a double lung transplant at 11:00 a.m.  Don and his wife, Lori, made the fast trip and mentally prepared themselves for a major surgery and a long road to recovery ahead.

Not asking anyone for any help they planned out their path and were ready to take on the daunting task.  My wife, Caroline, and I felt it was time to ask our wonderful community and the farmers of the Big Horn Basin that he has helped in their time of need, if they could help this family out.

Don has to stay in the Denver area for at least three months as he recovers.  Remember, for two years he has had to stop three to four times when walking 50 feet.  His endurance and physical strength have diminished and it is a long road to recovery, not to mention that he had both lungs replaced.

Lori and Don started planning for expenses two years ago when Don was placed on the transplant list, but housing in the Denver area has doubled so the money they have saved is not going to cover such expenses.  Lori needs to come home and return to her job so they must hire a care giver to keep a watchful eye on Don so he stays on track with his healing, anti-rejection meds and rehab.

We want to help and we think there are so many in our community who would like to help as well.  Because of all of this we feel it is the right thing to do and want to make a difference in their lives.  For those who live close by, you may go to the Bank of Powell and donate directly to the Don and Lori Hansen Medical Account if you wish, or you can donate through this site.  This sight is secure and safe.  Any donation, no matter how small, will help and is appreciated. Here is Don with his new life and lungs.  A proud man with passion for education, fixing tractors and a love for the community in which he lives.
