a brave, strong woman needs help

These are my sisters children.

My sister a few months ago made the hard decision to leave her husband of 10 years (together for 17).  Although she has started to regain much of her own physical and mental strength, she now finds herself in a financial predicament where she is struggling to give the children a life they grew accustom to, let alone providing basic necessities.

This is a tale I'm sure many women have felt or been apart of themselves.  In order to leave a marriage they don't want to be in, they face the possibility that they will not be able to make it financially. Many women stay in a marriage for years they don't want to be in out of fear...especially someone like my sister, who has not worked for years because of a family decision for her to be a full time mom and raise 4 children under her care, instead of the care of someone else. Not only was that better for the children, it made more financial sense for the family as well.

In a move that should have my sister feeling empowered, she feels anything but, and the reason is because of the financial pressures she is currently experiencing.

My sister currently has no car to cart 4 children around. The only money she currently has to take care of her 4 children is 1/2 of the child tax she receives from the government and the little emergency relief EI (employment insurance) she is currently receiving from the government.  But the last cheque for that was just cashed...and she will go a month without any more funds very soon.

While there are currently lots of charities for abuse and neglected women, there are none for those who simply leave a marriage that they don't want to be apart of anymore.

I have thought about doing this awhile for my sister, as I have witnessed the toll of being finically strapped on her, but pride or hope that things would work out better stopped me.  However, now is crunch time and it's something I simply need to do.  The lawyers say it could take anywhere from 30-90 days in the court system (maybe longer) before my sister sees any child support.

I am asking for money to get my sister through till that time.  Summer is coming and things like bikes, camping equipment, etc.. that the children have had in the past, my sister cannot afford to buy for them. My sister simply wants the fact that she left her husband to not affect the children's lives any more than it already has.  If they can enjoy life, perhaps things will become "normal" a little quicker.

Lastly, any excess money my sister gets from this campaign will be paid forward.  In what sense you ask?

Well when the time comes, and my sister and I discuss this, we will pass that money to another mother in the world/our community who desperately wants to leave her husband but is afraid.  Or that my sister and I set up a charity to help women with similar issues like the one she is going through.  Or at the very least donate the money to a local charity in Moncton, New Brunswick like the Humanity Project, that is raising money to buy a home to house and feed the homeless of the community.  Whatever it is, I (and I know my sister will) want to give back after my sister gets the support she needs.

Thank you in advance for whatever you can contribute.  My sister is a smart, strong, beautiful women, who right now feels none of those things a lot of the time.  She herself suffers from ulcerative colitis, to which she will have to start paying for her own medication after the divorce is finalized.

I hope no other woman has to go through this, but if they do, I hope that my sisters situation eventually gives them hope and the stength and courage to do what they feel will make their lives better.  Life is too short to live in misery, especially when you shouldn't have to.

Have a beautiful day!
