A blink into cetaceans' ecology

We are Marco and Michelle, husband and wife, dad and mum, marine biologists and whale lovers.

In August 2016 we left the comfort zone of Europe behind and we moved to Baja California, México, to investigate cetaceans.

The Gulf of California is worldwide one of the spots with the highest marine biodiversity. It was even renamed by Jacques Cousteau "the Aquarium of the World".


The choiche of establish our entire Doctor career in México goes against the better known as "good sense".
We left behind, in fact, not only our families and friends, but as well our economical security.

But we are not spring chickens anymore and we thought we could manage in a way or in another, despite the obvious difficulties of making science in a developing country.

The reality is that to run research can bring to the edge the most motivated person.

Our projects are barely surviving and we are in need of concrete help.

Due to the up coming elections, the Mexican Government has cut the 60% of the total money directed to research.

Private companies and institutions don't invest in projects that have as main aim "pure science".
We don't move economy, we just want to apport knownledge to protect and conserve the marine environment.
Under the business point of view, we are completely useless.

The result is that we have to rely to the little contribution of our Research Institution, to the hope of being supported for a little while from a fellowship (difficult to obtain due to the constant increasing demand compared to the small offer) or to our personal finances, that are by far not sufficients.

Field work and laboratory analysis are expensive matters.
 
Money are needed to:
- cover all the logistic costs (fuel for the boat, crew, food, accomodations)
- buy sampling tools (TAGs and hydrophones)
- analize samples (send the samples to special laboratories)
