Kappa League is a worldwide mentoring program for young men from 6th to 12th grade. Most of the young men are from the inner cities and do not have money nor the means to participate in extracurricular activities. The West Palm Beach Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Inc. local chapter’s program aims to give these young men new and different ways to spend their time. It also gives them a different perspective on life situations and how to approach obstacles.
We are again planning for our upcoming year. We start planning over the summer so we are all set and ready to kick off Kappa League once the school year starts. The West Palm Beach Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Inc. is current in its grass roots stage of redeveloping its local Kappa League Chapter . The local chapter was founded in 1954 and for years the chapter has worked on a small scale, mentoring young men and using the resources within the members of the chapter. This chapter is enriched with a number of members that are employed by the Palm Beach County School Board in the capacity of Principals, Guidance Counselors, Teachers and more. With such a huge demand and a strong desire to help these young men, the chapter is looking to branch out and help more on a large scale. We believe that the mentoring should not be a financial strain of burden on the young men or the families that we work with. As a chapter we try to remove as much of the financial burden as possible.
Last year with 14 young men , we raised a little shy of $3,000 through fundraising. The money made it possible for us to offering the parents some financial relief. It also allowed the young men the opportunity to participate in community events as well as provide Kappa League materials. This upcoming year we have 27 young men on the roster.
Some of the things we are hoping to do this upcoming year are:
· Provide supplies and materials needed for young men that enter the program (without asking their parents or family to pay for it).
· Have some of the young men participate in a six school college tour.
· Provide school supplies to the Kappa Leaguers.
· Have an end of the year trip to Island of Adventure or a retreat.
· Assist in providing funds toward scholarships for our graduating seniors.
