WGHS Science Lab Refurbishment Project

Wesley Girls’ High School (WGHS), located in Cape Coast, Ghana, West Africa, is an all girls’ secondary school established in 1836 by Mrs. Harriet Wrigley, the wife of a Methodist missionary with 25 girls. It has since been arguably the best female school in the country and has been consistently ranked in the top 100 high schools in Africa.

It is a tradition of the alumni on their 20th anniversary post-graduation to give back to maintain the school’s infrastructure and provide any other needed support. The 2020 Speech and Prize Giving day which also coincides with the 183rd anniversary of the school will be hosted by the 1999 year group. Our year group is passionate about Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Career Mentoring and promoting a maintenance culture. Thus, we have chosen to refurbish the Physics, Chemistry and Biology laboratories in the school and set up a maintenance fund to ensure the continuous maintenance and upkeep of the laboratories.  In addition, we have established a mentoring program, where alumni mentor current and recently graduated students from WGHS in career options in the STEM fields and beyond.

WGHS has produced great women leaders in the STEM fields including but not limited to the first female pilot in Africa, the first Ghanaian woman to lead a multi-national Telecommunications Company (Airtel) and most recently won a prize for the best performing female school in the National Science and Math Quiz (NSMQ) in 2019.

We invite you to partner with us to provide these remarkable girls with the tools to have a greater impact in STEM fields and beyond.  Your kind donation will help us with the building works. This will include breaking down and rebuilding parts of the old science laboratories and reinstating electric, water and gas connections. It will also go towards providing new laboratory fittings and fixtures. 

As a member of the 1999 year group, I set up this GoFundme page to raise funds towards the project. All donations received will be sent by me directly to the year group’s account  and used towards the project.
