William Deane, SR | Murdered Vet

Donation protected
William Deane, SR (Bill) was a Veteran of the Navy (Vietnam Vet) who had a very kind heart. He would have done anything for those he loved. He loved his grandchildren with all of his heart and did everything he could for them. He was completely blind from glaucoma and macular degeneration. He also formed cataracts at a young age (Service Related). After 12 years of living with his only son and grandchildren, he decided to move in with an old friend and the friend's wife (March 2017).  Four months after moving in, his friend's wife decided to divorce her husband and marry Bill. They got married in June 2017 according to the marriage records in the county.

After moving, he became very sick. He survived a heart-attack, a fall during the recovery period of the heart-attack and infections from wounds that would not heal because of his diabetes. He was strong and fought through all of that! He had gotten very healthy again these last few months and was receiving care from a nurse every morning for 4-5 hours. His mind was more competent than it had ever been, and he began talking about coming back home just days before he passed.

On Sunday, October 14, 2018 his wife decided to take his life right before taking her own.  See News Report. This was a complete shock to his daughter-in-law, son, and grandchildren - who are all the family he really had that would be left to handle the funeral arrangements. We are now trying to cremate him, per his wishes, but cannot come up with the money to do so. We live paycheck to paycheck and did not expect this to happen.

The people at the morgue have told us that we have 10 days to come up with money to have him cremated or they will treat the situation as they would an unclaimed body. The procedure for unclaimed bodies (this is what they told us) is to go ahead and cremate the body, then dump the ashes into some water. We have reached out to the Veterans Department and they said they cannot help us because his death was not natural or service related. They did send us forms to fill out for a flag and headstone.

We have also reached out to SSI who said there was nothing they could do to help. The funeral homes are also requesting money upfront to even begin the process, one we called did say they will start the process if we can give them half ($500.00). We are at a loss on what to do and are asking for help before the 10 days run out.  We will have him cremated and that will help us gain some time to plan the memorial service for him.  Anything over our goal amount will be used toward the service we plan to have in a few weeks. Thank you for reading and for any help you can give! Please read the 2 updates.
