Henry and Maria's daughter Vanessa Ryan was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome in March 2017. Vanessa is a 23 years old & her son Lucas will be 2 this July. Henry, Maria, and her sisters Amy & Mia have put everything on hold to allow themselves to be by her side and with Lucas every step of the way.
Guillain-Barre (GBS) is a rare syndrome in which your own immune system attacks your nervous system, causing paralysis and in some cases respiratory failure. It can also interfere with heart rate and blood pressure. It is a serious condition that requires immediate hospitalization because symptoms worsen rapidly. It attacks patients at such a quick pace- there is little to no time to prepare for it. There is no "cure" for GBS, however most people recover from it.
Vanessa was in the ICU for 4 weeks fighting GBS along with many other unexpected complications- at times she has essentially fought for her life. She is still paralyzed & on a respirator for breathing. Her heart rate and other functions of her autonomic nervous system have stabilized- leaving her family with a new hope that her recovery process has started. She has moved to Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital and is working hard to regain her strength.
The recovery process is often slow and painful, and can take anywhere from 3 months to years. Sometimes after recovery there are no lingering effects, and other times patients may experience lasting effects- such as extreme fatigue, inability to walk, weakness, or numbness.
We are raising money to help with the Ryan family's current expenses and the expenses they will incur when Vanessa comes home. She will be in need of a variety of specialized home amenities. Any contribution would be greatly appreciated.
