Two years ago I coached a brave young boy in the Williston Park Little League whose name is Ty Patrick Flood. Ty is now 10 years old and has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), a fatal genetic disorder. DMD is a muscle disease, which is progressively debilitating. By 10-12 years old most children with DMD require the assistance of a wheelchair. Later complications include respiratory and heart failure as well as debilitating orthopedic complications. Unfortunatley there is no cure.
When I coached Ty two years ago he had difficulty walking but would hit a grounder and the throw would get to first base way before him but he would run every ball out even though it probably took him 30 seconds to go 60 feet... He ALWAYS ran it out! Ty loves the game of baseball. He is an avid Yankee fan and loves Derek Jeter. As a Met fan I would tease him every practice and every game and tell him the Mets are #1 and Jeter stinks. He would read off Jeter's stats and the Yankees record and tell me the Mets stink! Ty maybe physically challenged but he has the heart of a lion!
Ty's disease has progressed to the point where it has become much harder for him and his family - both physically and financially. This deserving family needs help. Ty’s parents, Timothy and Beth are two wonderful people. Tim is a veteran Special Agent at Homeland Security Investigations, with more than 26 years of service to his country. By necessity, Beth left her employment to attend to Ty’s needs, as well as to care for his younger sisters, Tara and Emma. With the loss of Beth’s income, the Flood family has endured protracted financial hardship. The family is now faced with additional hurdles as their home will require substantial modifications to make it wheelchair accessible. A suitable vehicle that can safely transport a motorized wheelchair also is needed. Without assistance, the Floods will have to leave their home and their tight-knit community of friends. Such change could be devastating for a family and the community
