Transformations:Cosplay Photo Project

In this project, I am photographing cosplayers / media-genre costumers both in and out of costume. The title “Transformations” refers to how cosplayers transform themselves from their “mundane” daily appearance and temporarily become the characters they portray.

While cosplay photographs are now fairly ubiquitous on the Internet, and even show up in the mainstream press (sometimes due to a few outrageous and sometimes quite scantily-clad cosplayers) little focus has been paid to the people behind the costumes.

Traditional-style portraits are taken with an eye toward gallery exhibition, using mainly 4x5 large-format film cameras. The main focus is on the characters themselves.

Films are expensive at $4 a sheet. I do save a lot from processing my own film, but there are other expenses as well. I hope to take photos of cosplayers in the West Coast area and that would involve traveling.

Hello donors, one more update: thanks to your generous donation, the Transformations:Cosplay project is progressing well. I am hoping to make it to Anime North this year, and if I do, I will then start working on the first book in the volume.

I would like to send each one of you a letter sized photo as a token of appreciation. Please email me richard@richardmanphoto.com with your mailing address. Thank you.

Tasu and Ivy's photo on the left was taken in Jan 2014 and in fact was the first photo taken for the project. I have taken "casual" photos of them then in March or so, but as the project evolves, I thought that a different pose would be better. Even though they live less than 20 miles away, finding the time to get together turns out to be difficult. Finally though, a couple days ago they showed up during the only day this week that isn't raining and I finally got the photo I want.

Hello, the latest update: thanks to a generous donation of a Profoto 1200 pack+heads, I can now control the lighting a lot better. I have also purchased a used L-358 flash meter with builtin radio transmitter, making shooting with mixed lighting a lot simpler and easier to control. This is an auxiliary photo I have taken for the latest photo shoot for the project.

Thank you again.
