On Christmas Day, 2016, Todd Johnson was admitted to the hospital in a small rural hospital in Appleton, MN with severe back and stomach pain.  They did a CT Scan and saw a suspicious mass that was in his abdomen.  They were very concerned, and wanted to get him a biopsy.  Todd was told that the soonest they could get him in to see an oncologist was January 10th.  Due to the serious nature of the situation, Todd’s sister Erika flew to Minneapolis to try and get him into the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN so that answers could be gathered more quickly.  They were successful in getting admitted.   Their worst fears were confirmed when Todd was told he has stage 4 advanced widespread cancer that has metastasized throughout his organs and bones.
Todd and his wife Machelle are devastated with this news.  Both Todd and Machelle work at Walmart in rural Minnesota and do not have the resources to battle this by themselves.  They need our help.    We are hoping to raise funds to help Todd and Machelle get all the assistance they need to relieve some of the worry that comes with their uncertain future.  Machelle lives four hours away from the Mayo Clinic and needs to continue to work to support her household.  There will be many doctors visits, overnights and testing follow up appointments to come.  The loss of Todd's income will make it incredibly difficult to meet their obligations, as they live on an 8 acre farm and care for a variety of animals including horses and chickens. Todd and Machelle are very good hardworking people who love their animals and their life together.

It all seems incredibly unfair, but we don’t want to wallow in misery.  We want them to have hope.  Even if the long term situation seems dire, we need to raise enough money to give them some peace of mind that their community, their friends, their family, and even complete strangers are here for them.  If ever there was a reason for a GO FUND ME page, this would be it.  Please consider helping in any way you can.  We need to show them all the love and financial support we can send their way to help them overcome this painful news.  “There but for the grace of God, go I.”  This could happen to any of us, and we want the story to have a better ending than where we are now.  Todd and his wife Machelle are truly appreciative of your support.  Updates on Todd will be shared here.

Thank you for all your help...big or small.

It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that Todd Johnson succumbed to his cancer today. He passed away peacefully at home with his wife Machelle by his side. While this has been a tragedy in many ways, the family holds on to the belief that he is in a better place. Anyone who has been touched by cancer knows how devastating it can be. Todd battled through one of the toughest cases we had ever seen. Your thoughts and prayers were well received during his care.

Todd agreed early on in the process to donate his body to the Mayo Clinic where he received treatment. This will allow one of the world's best cancer clinics the opportunity to research and study his case to help those in the future who face a similar battle.

Whenever someone passes before their perceived time, it is natural to feel a bit cheated. We want more time, more memories, more experiences, more love, more everything. This is a reminder for all of us to truly embrace the precious relationships we all enjoy. Life is precious and Todd has helped us all realize to not take it for granted. Todd was a proud Husband, Son, Brother and friend to many. He will be sorely missed. We thank him for all the wonderful memories he gave us, and we thank you for your kindness in his time of need.

Sincerely,

The Johnson Family

Greetings to all of those that have contributed to The Todd Johnson Cancer Fund. I know most of you, but for those that I have not met, I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Shannon Watson. Todd Johnson is my brother in law. My wife is Erika Johnson Watson, who is Todd's brother. She is the one who encouraged me to start this campaign for Todd. Erika and I are proud to announce that we officially exceeded our fundraising goal, all due to the generosity of everyone reading this email. What happens next? We will have Erika withdraw the funds on Todd's behalf. She will be responsible for paying for the items that Todd needs upon arriving home. This will include walkers, wheel chairs and other medical items. In addition, she will be working with a contractor/remodeler to help build a downstairs bath and bedroom for Todd due to his mobility issues. And of course, the rest of the funds will be given directly to Todd and Machelle via a check to offset their medical expenses and loss of income from him being out of work. Erika wants to make sure that Todd and Machelle have less things to worry about when he comes home. We feel that it is so very important for all contributors to know what a difference they have made for Todd and Machelle. We can't thank you enough.

Sincerely,

Shannon and Erika Watson

It's Monday, January 23rd, 2017. I wanted to post a quick update on Todd. After much back and forth, Todd never did get to go home, due to complications that kept arising over the past week. He completed one round of Chemotherapy last Monday and they hope to do another session tomorrow. The complex issues he has faced range from battling infection, low oxygen levels and high fever. He has been retaining fluids which has caused edema throughout his body. Given these issues, they did not want to release him until they could be sure that he would not have an event which would lead him back to the hospital. The past two days have gone well, and they are now hopeful that these complications are under control. There is a good chance that Todd will be able to be released for a period of time. He wants to get out, even for a few days, so he is working hard to make that happen. We are so excited that friends and family have stepped up to help support Todd financially. Those of you with family members who have suffered through a major medical event know that Todd and Machelle have a long road in front of them. We are looking to use funds to outfit Todd with a wheelchair and a walker so he can maintain mobility. We are also looking at modifying his downstairs to accommodate a bedroom and bath, as this is currently located upstairs, and is not accessible to him in this condition. Needless to say, the funds we raise will be well utilized towards his care. We truly feel the prayers you have been sending him. The family is so humbled by the generosity. Hopefully, the next update will be one of good news about Todd's release from the hospital. Until then, please accept our thanks for your support.

Dear Friends and Family. After Todd was released last Thursday, he was readmitted on Saturday, due to a high fever and severe swelling in his legs. He was hopeful to be able to go home and spend a few days with Machelle and his pets. His condition was stabilized later that day, but he has spent the weekend back in the hospital. He did complete his radiation treatments, which should start to help his back pain. While these measures are not curative, they are considered "palliative", which is all related to making sure he is as comfortable as possible. They have decided to do chemotherapy treatments as well. While typically, this makes you feel terrible, in Todd's case, due to the severity of his situation, they are hopeful it will make him feel better. The good news is that they hope to release him tomorrow to go stay at his parents house, which is about 1 1/2 hours away. This will allow him to rest in his childhood home, and be with loved ones for a couple of days...and then go home to Appleton, MN to be with his wife later this week. He will then return to Mayo to do his next round of chemo on Monday. All of your donations will be used to offset the tremendous financial burden this has placed on Todd and his family. We can't thank you enough for your gift. It means so much to be able to tell Todd that he has some relief coming. We can't wait until Todd gets to spend a few days with his dog, Penny, and his beloved horses.
Penny waits patiently...
