About The Sustainability Institute:

The Sustainability Institute ("SI") focuses on improving housing in vulnerable communities by weatherizing and upgrading homes to make them more energy efficient, healthy and sustainable. As a result, families experience significant ongoing savings on their utility bills and a higher quality of life inside their home. Because upgraded homes last longer and are more livable and affordable, families are able to stay in their homes and communities become more stable.

SI also operates an AmeriCorps-affiliated, workforce training program for at-risk young adults aged 18-25. The program has been nationally-recognized for its innovative approach and outstanding results, including a 90% job placement rate for graduates. Students participate in service learning as they repair homes in the community for families in need, gain valuable construction and professional skills, earn industry certifications, and get placed in career opportunities upon graduation.

SI has weatherized more than 230 low-income homes in the Charleston metro area. They have also trained more than 125 young adults and produced two National Corps Member of the Year award winners.
