Anthony Brattoli Medical Costs

Anthony, a 2015 graduate of Lincoln Way North High School, from Tinley Park, IL,  was a double English and Slavic Studies (Russian) concentrator at Brown University in Providence, RI, and would have been starting his fourth (and final year) there in September. He had just finished a semester abroad at Trinity College in Dublin. For the summer, he was working in Prague at an international law firm translating legal documents from Russian into English and teaching the receptionists English.

Anthony played tuba in the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra for three years and the National Youth Orchestra in 2015, traveling to China. He also played at the State Department in Washington for Joe Biden, John Kerry, and the president of China. He was a finalist in the President's Own Concerto Competition in 2015. At Brown, he played in the orchestra and won the university’s concerto competition in 2017.  Here is his performance of the concerto https://youtu.be/oR32sHiOiJw

On June 20, 2018, Anthony suffered a brain hemorrhage brought on by an AVM (arteriovenous malformation) in his brain. He did not know he had this AVM, and there was nothing he did wrong. He just collapsed.

He was rushed to the Prague Military Hospital where emergency brain surgery was performed. Though the bleeding was controlled, the damage was significant. He has been in a coma and now vegetative state ever since the surgery with a very poor prognosis due to the significant brain damage from what the Czech doctors call a "disaster" of bleeding in his brain. This hospital in Prague is an excellent hospital and has provided him with the best care possible. Unfortunately, the bleeding in his brain was so significant that they are limited in what they can do for him.

I have been in Prague since Anthony became ill and will remain here until he is able to fly home. His brother Nick also came for a brief visit. We are working to arrange an air ambulance flight home. We are fortunate that he was still covered under Brown's study abroad insurance, so the repatriation costs will be paid by Brown and its insurance company.

However, we are still required to pay $10,000 medical expenses not covered by my health insurance. We have also incurred significant expenses including, but not limited to, the last minute flight I had to take ($3600), accommodations ($2000 and increasing the longer I am here), transportation within Prague, cell phone in Prague ($250 so far but increasing daily), meals in Prague for me, and more.

Once he is back in the U.S., we will have to pay some rent expenses to his roommate in Providence who is now left holding a lease on his own ($520 per month) and costs to get his personal belongings including two tubas back from Providence. There will also be long term medical expenses for the remainder of his life, however long that ends up being.
