TREMENDOUS at APAP 2018

Donation protected
Dear Friends,

Patricia Noworol Dance Theater is raising money to help offset the costs for presenting their latest work, TREMENDOUS (excerpts), at the Dance Manager's Collective , APAP|NYC 2018! Help us reach our goal of $2,500 in support of fair payment for collaborating artists in preparation for this important opportunity for PNDT.

As you may know, APAP|NYC is an important platform for artists in all fields to celebrate and share their work with hundreds of presenters, organizations and other participating artists from all over the USA and abroad. PNDT is thrilled to bring back TREMENDOUS (excerpts) after its amazing run at La Mama Moves! Dance Festival this past June.

What we need:

While we have already independently secured 75% of the funds for rehearsal space as well as the performance venue at New York City Center, we need your help to raise $2,500 by January 1, 2017, to put the finishing touches on this project. These funds will sustain our deserving collaborative artists for their time and beautiful effort and provide transportation for musical equipment and personel.

We are sincerely grateful for your continued support over the past few years. Any donation that you can manage will be greatly appreciated!

About the Artistic Director

Patricia Noworol, award-winning choreographer, dancer and teacher, graduated from the Folkwang University of Essen, Germany with a BFA in Dance Performance on Stage and an MFA in Dance Education. She also attended the New York University Tisch School of the Arts on scholarship before graduating with her second MFA in Dance and Choreography in 2008. Additionally, she studied intensely under The Merce Cunningham Dance Foundation and The Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute in New York City.

Upon graduating NYU in 2008, Ms Noworol established Patricia Noworol Dance Theater (PNDT, also known as PND) as a home for her creative work and based the company in New York City.

About PNDT

Patricia Noworol directs her New York City-based company in the creation of evocative Dance and Physical Theater performances. Since its inception in 2008, PNDT has been presented at The Ailey Citigroup Theatre, Danspace Project, 92nd Street Y, Manhattan Movement Arts Center, Duo Theater, Atlas Theater, Fete de L’Hurricane, Dance Now Festival, American Dance Guild Festival, The Gala Benefit & Festival Performances at Dumbo Dance Festival, White Wave and La MaMa Moves Dance Festival, among others.

PNDT’s evening length work, Circuits, won an EXCELLENCE AWARD for Outstanding Choreography at the 2009 NYC Fringe Festival. Fueled with this momentum, PNDT toured Circuits to the RUHR 2010 European Capital of Culture, and many other significant venues in Germany. Additionally, PNDT has obtained residencies at The Bessie Alumni Workshop and The DMAC Duo Theater in NYC.

Noworol’s work as a choreographer has been met with glowing critical acclaim and extraordinary international media attention. From receiving The Young Artist Award of the Ministry of Arts and Culture in North Rhine-Westphalia/Germany in 2002 to being featured in television, radio, and press around Europe and the U.S., Noworol has long enjoyed her work as a vibrant member of an international community.

About TREMENDOUS

Driven by the current political climate, TREMENDOUS connects individual stories of the female experience to the spectrum of social injustices and the need for unity. Director/choreographer Patricia Noworol and her multicultural and international ensemble expose shared vulnerabilities and defense mechanisms to celebrate the durability and persistence of female strength. Can we unify selectively? Can we be distilled to only one of our defining characteristics? How do we choose which parts of us to defend when oppressed from several angles?

Following the world premiere of TREMENDOUS at New York’s LaMama Moves! Festival, The Brooklyn Rail reviewed:

“the burning question at the core of this complex new work is: ‘What does it mean to exist as a woman in the age of Trump?’ With a nod to Donald Trump’s reductive and hyperbolic verbiage, Noworol bravely explores this treacherous terrain with a striking, powerful, and diverse cast of five female performers (Kayla Farrish, Rebecca Margolick, Troy Ogilvie, Mei Yamanaka, and Mika Yanagihara,) accompanied live by the electro-acoustic musician Lisa Maree Dowling, who composed the haunting score for the piece.”

The work entwines contemporary dance, tanztheater and spoken word in an emotionally salient and politically driven visual space. Noworol’s imagery takes surprising and frequently unsettling turns, exploring the age-old gender divide and the recent resurgence of reactionary attitudes towards women’s issues. Even though the performers seem to be subjected by an invisible hand to a metaphorical nightmare boot camp, their exercising of learning and unlearning of reductive stereotypes has ultimately an empowering effect.

TREMENDOUS was selected by BOMB Magazine's  Looking Back on 2017: Theater & Performance.
