Background:
Townsville is a city located on the north-eastern coast of Queensland. It is Australia’s largest urban centre north of the Sunshine Coast, with a population over 185,000. Townsville is the fourth most populated city in Queensland after Brisbane, Gold Coast, and Sunshine Coast.
In the early 1990s, Muslims in Townsville purchased a property at 183 Ross River Road in a suburb called Mundingburra. With local community efforts and help from various Islamic organisations in Australia and overseas, we were able to establish the first Mosque in Townsville.
Townsville Islamic Society Incorporated was formed to look after Muslims in Townsville, as well as manage the Mosque. Townsville Islamic Society Inc. is registered with the Office of Fair Trading and Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC).
Recent Years:
The Muslim community in Townsville has experienced substantial growth in recent years with an influx of refugees from overseas as well as people from various professions making Townsville their home.
Attempts have been made over the past couple of years to develop the current premises to cater for the growing numbers frequenting the Townsville Mosque. The small extensions to the side and front to add extra space, extra toilets and ablution facilities were added in 2015. But while these extensions have been just adequate, we are still facing some issues.
Current Premises Issues:
Capacity constraints and inability to provide worshippers with basic comforts are most evident during large religious congregational gatherings throughout the year but most notably during Jumu’ah and Eid prayers.
Demand for space has also been fuelled by the growth of many of the activities the society currently offers. An example of this is during weekend classes for children. These classes have attracted the attention of Muslim parents who, in turn promoted the Mosque to others, resulting in an increasing demand for places within the Islamic school.
Further increases are expected as a consequence of the success of the Centre and the growing demographics of the Muslim population in and around the Townsville region and beyond.
Our Needs:
We would like to expand our current main building to cater for an increased number of worshippers.
We would also like to house a permanent Imam in the near future, as well as establish an Islamic school with adequate space and proper facilities.
Opportunity:
The property next door, situated at 185 Ross River Road has recently come on the market for sale. This is an ideal opportunity for us to be able to expand our current premises. Please refer to photos below:
Townsville Islamic Society has made an offer and our offer has been accepted by the vendor. The terms of agreement are that we are liable to pay 10 percent deposit immediately, and have three months to pay the remaining 90 percent. Alhamdulillah, the local community have been united in this noble cause and we have been able to put together the deposit to secure the deal.
However, we are in dire need of more funds, and are looking to raise funds from other Islamic Societies in Australia as well as overseas.
Our Appeal:
Aboo Hurairah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reported from the Prophet Muhammad (sallahu alayhi wasalam) that he said: "When a son of Adam dies, his good works come to an end, except for three: Sadaqah jariyah (ongoing charity), beneficial knowledge (that he discovered or propagated), and a righteous child who will pray for him.” [Reported in Saheeh Bukhari and Saheeh Muslim]
Helping to expand and build an Islamic Centre counts as sadaqah jariyyah, a special act of charity which continues to provide the reward of ongoing good deeds to its giver even after they have reached their grave.
Our target is to raise $450,000 in the next three months.
