We recently were hit by a tornado from tropical storm Colin on June 6th 2016. When it was all said and done and we looked outside to find one car crushed by branches and the other covered by a tree. Our worst thought was how are we going to continue to bless others the way we do. I am a substitute special education teacher and my wife deliveries food to people in need. We also have a business and this has possibly put a glitch in fulfilling some of the events we have coming up. Our plan is to open a location and hire those with disabilities. Please help us help others.

We are DJ Dabbs and Chef Shelli and we believe all people are part of the community; however people with learning disabilities often get overlooked so we plan on doing something about it. We would like to open a dessert café’ that will provide jobs and teach independence.

We have been trying to get this business off the ground for over two years. Several opportunities have been brought to us and failed to make it through to the next step. We have also been approached by people who have not had our vision at heart.

We have been creators in One Spark, a crowd funding event in Jacksonville, FL during 2014, 2015 and 2016 which helped to get our name out in the public. People came to us this year saying they remembered us and asking where we were. We have built a fan base.

Currently we bake in our home and are held by the cottage laws which state I can’t sell online, besides who buys delicious smelling cookies and pies online? Ice cream would melt. We also can't put a sign on my lawn. We have been selling at our space at the Jacksonville farmers market on the weekends which is slow but steady. In order to get the funds to get our brick and mortar we have to CARPE DIEM.

We so badly want to help those with learning disabilities get a start with jobs and more and we have not wavered from this. Please help; please show that you care and that you believe. This business can help so many live productive happy lives. It is being done all over the country and now we want it in Jacksonville, FL. The mobile concession cart is the next step.

We have a realtor who has been following our progress since 2014. She is now the property manager for a building in an ideal space. These funds will help us to renovate, get equipment, hire staff and show how amazing this can be.

We both have children with learning disabilities , this is not just a dream but for us a reality.

Help Us Help Others

We are looking to provide Sweet Treats and Sweet Music to a family entertainment desert, the community of Springfield, on the Northside of Jacksonville. We will also be providing employment to an under-utilized population, those with learning disabilities. There are many disabilities that are routine driven and precise, working in the pastry arts is a perfect fit. On the lounge side we will teach sound engineering as music has healing properties and a calming effect. This is near and dear to our heart as our daughter has learning disabilities and that inspired the launch of The Sweet Spot & Urban Lounge.

This might be a new idea to Jacksonville but the concept works very well in many other cities. My wife and I are like many people who start a business, we have a passion for what we do and why we do it. We are parents of a child with a learning disability and we understand that traditional colleges may not be an option. DJ Dabbs has a Master’s degree in Special Education and teaches children with learning disabilities. Many of these students do not know what they want to do after high school and college is by far their last thought.
Chef Shelli is a graduated Pastry Chef and brings to the business many years of experience. We have decided we would combine our passions together and create The Sweet Spot Dessert Café so we can fill a void in Jacksonville and help these individuals feel more like part of the city we love.
