We've all seen their faces in the news. The terrified children, helpless mothers, desperate fathers. We want to save them all, but we ourselves feel helpless, staring on from so far away. For the families in war-torn countries like Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan, they're lucky if they make it safely to a refugee camp. From there, of the 1.2 million people in need of resettlement, only 125,000 get the chance to do so.
After the extreme vetting process they go through, the families that are fortunate enough to be allowed entry into the US are now confronted with a new set of challenges. Coming here with virtually nothing but the clothes on their backs, not knowing the culture or often speaking the language, these refugees often feel isolated, scared, and unsure of how to get started in their new life.
One World One Love began to grow organically as the desire for people to help refugees became wildly apparent.
Who One World One Love Is...
We are ordinary citizens who were moved to action by the suffering of our brothers and sisters in Syria and elsewhere. What started as an effort to collect some much needed items for Syrian refugees coming to America has evolved into an organization many hundreds strong.
Who We Work With...
We welcome and help set up apartments for refugee families from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Sudan, Cuba, Eritrea, and all over the world.
We currently work closely with about 16 families (8 from Syria, 3 from Afghanistan, 3 from Iraq, 2 from Sudan, 1 from Cuba), but we are always adding more families as they reach out to us. We've become close with the families we work with; we have social visits where our children play together, and we assist them with the various challenges that arise in a new culture (translation services and assitance with the administrative and social services (registering for SS #, vaccinations / medical clearance, school and employment etc) as well as provide them with clothing and shoes for themselves and their children.
What We Do...
When a new family is about to arrive, members of the One World One Love community come together to clean, furnish and stock the new apartment so that the family arrives in an environment that is comfortable and welcoming. It often takes a few weeks for them to figure out how to get groceries and basic needs covered, so the items we bring initially are often their lifeline during this most vulnerable time.
After the initial welcoming, we provide assistance in various capacities that support and enable self-sufficiency, such as career advice, school and employment advocacy, navigating transportation, shopping, paperwork and the library. Most importantly, we provide friendship and support so that they know they're not alone in their new home.
What comes next...
Aside from providing families with their basic needs (apartment set up, clothing, food, shoes, home items), One World One Love is also beginning to offer programming such as music classes for children, that will grow into an Intergenerational Literacy Program. These programs are designed to bridge social, cultural and basic human needs, and to help these families and their children build a solid foundation for their new lives here.
Additionally, we are planning day trips for the refugee families, such as a trip to the beach. Many of the families have never seen the ocean, and the thought of the children getting out of their small apartments in Elizabeth and having a day to relax and heal is a gift we so passionately hope to give.
