Some of the greatest dreams are inspired by role models - figures we see who we can relate to and see ourselves in - it’s this key factor why representation matters.
In the sneaker industry, women who are major players do not get the same levels of recognition as their male counterparts. The underwhelming number of women highlighted in sneaker culture does not accurately reflect the number of women present in the game. We’ve seen and understand the challenges of underrepresentation and the issues faced as a woman in a heavily dominated male industry, and we are building a new narrative.
We have decided to create an event to provide exposure to key women figures in the sneaker industry through an interactive workshop that helps illustrate the variety of roles in the sneaker industry followed by a panel discussion - promoting networking throughout. The workshop and panel will include designers, writers, collaborators, and influencers - all female and all impactful.
We want our event to empower young women and inspire the next generation of women to confidently pursue their passions without feeling uncertain because they’re one of a few in a typically male-dominated sphere. We want the next generation of women to know that they aren’t limited in what they can do and the next generation of men to understand the importance of diversity and inclusion.
As two women with engineering degrees who have worked in and around the sneaker industry, we know what it feels like to be one of a few and understand the power of representation and support. With this event, we hope to reach students through engagement with sneaker culture to educate them on how to capitalize on their passions and turn them into a career, whilst promoting diversity and inclusion by featuring powerful women in the game.
